Re: Why no TOW/HAUL Button on WK2 with Trailer Tow Group?

Because the Germans do not need it ? That business about the extra 3rd gear sounds like doubletalk to me. Thought the Hemi got a six speed lockup trans with two overdrive ratios. Makes sense you might disable the MDS but I would tend to enagage the lockup more when towing to keep the trans temp down.

6th is a .67:1 vs a .83:1 for the V6. With a 3.09 gear the overal ratio in top/locked is 2.56:1 pushing a 30" tire. The V-8 has a 3.45 gear for a 2.31 top so for the same tire diameter, the V8 is turning 10% slower to help cruise MPG. Frankly the Hemi needs all the help it can get to help MPG. Both would probably be even better with a CVT but none (yet) can take the torque of either.

Interesting set of specs at http://www.automobile-catalog.com , show the V8 being slower through the 1/4 than the V6 mainly because of a 600 lb higher curb weight.

Which brings up an interesting point to ponder: the EPA shows the same MPG range 17/23 2wd 16/23 4wd V6 87 PON, 14/20 2wd, 13/20 4wd V8 91 PON regardless of options. Personally suspect a 5000 lb Limited V6 with al the chrome options will not get as good MPG as a 4400 lb Laredo and the same for a V8. If I were to run a fuel economy rally, I'd even leave the full sized spare at home.

Re: Why no TOW/HAUL Button on WK2 with Trailer Tow Group?

The extra 3rd would come into play in stop start traffic, with a fully loaded trailer.
For light loads it would have no advantage.
The same would apply at hwy speeds with a fully loaded trailer stop shifting up and down.
The HEMI is nearly at the full torque capacity for the trans as well.

So for a V6 towing... let's say... 22-2300 lbs. Should I put the trans in 4th gear instead of drive to prevent the overdrive from kicking in? Or is that over-thinking things a bit too much?

I would watch the tach, and if the engine keeps kicking in and out of overdrive, (revs go up and down) that would tell me to switch it out of 5th and keep it in 4th.
It will be better overall for your tranny not to have to work so hard.

Re: Why no TOW/HAUL Button on WK2 with Trailer Tow Group?

I have a 2012 Laredo X V-6 and I do not have the "Tow/Haul" option either although the car came with the Tow Group which includes the hitch and wiring.

Does anyone know if the Tow/Haul button can be added on? Is the transmission and wiring harness for the car different? Does any V-6 have this option or is it only for the V-8's?? Thanks for the help!

LOL! That site is hysterical. Actually the V6 I looked at was 0-60 in 9.5 seconds and the quarter in 17.1 seconds. The V8 was 0-60 in 8 seconds and the quarter in 15.8 seconds.

Those number still looked off since I've seen a number of videos showing Hemi WK2s doing 0-60 in under 7 seconds. So I did a little checking on that site. Those performance numbers are all estimated from "software simulation". LOL!

Here's the fine print

The Tow/Haul button is only for the V8. The V8 has a Chrysler designed transmission. The V6 on the other hand has a Mercedes designed transmission which doesn't have a direct overdrive lock out feature.

So, for the V6, you need to use the Electronic Range Select (ERS) feature to limit the transmission to 4th gear. That way it won't kick into 5th (Overdrive) when towing. While in drive, bump the shifter to the right until "4" appears in the EVIC. Happy towing.

Ditto
I use the "ERS" on hilly undulating roads and leave it in "D" 5th for long flat roads with no problems
