Wierd check engine problem

After picking up the vehicle at dealer for first ride, I experienced a engine light came on and engine raced while transmission slowed down. I pulled to the curb and light went out and engine idled as it should. I tried to pull out and drive and the situation repeated so I pulled to curb. I may have hit the paddles but I saw the tranny was in sport mode so shifted it back to drive and I returned to dealer which was uneventful. Dealer checked it out and found nothing. Since this happened, I have driven in both drive and sport with no problem but I have not touched the paddles. Paddle mode is poorly explained in the manual.

Can anyone tell me the proper usage of the left and right paddles and if my problem could have been caused by accidental misuse.

Also the steering wheel backside buttons for volume change and channel/station change work as intended but what are the square buttons in the middle for.

Tap right to up shift, tap left to down shift, hold right paddle for 2 sec to go back to drive. Pull back on shift once in drive to go to sport (holds gears longer, will stay in gear all the way to redline when paddle shifter is used, higher rpms in D, turns off eco mode). Pull back on shifter again to go back to normal mode. When paddle shifters engage the gear number lights up next to drive.

Maybe if you were in sport and had paddle shifter engaged, that would explain the high rpms and slow speed.

Left middle button is radio mode (fm, am, sat, etc.)
Right middle button is to toggle preset stations.

Those last two could be opposite. Try them, you'll see.

Thanks I will try to. Today I started trip with about 60 miles on engine and drove the first 50 at 55mph then 60 for the next 50. After that I drove next 100 at 65 and rest of trip (total 600) at cruise 70. Trip meter showed I averaged 25.2 mpg even with some stop and go and rest stops and a half hour nap with engine at idle and A/C on. I am happy so far with the little 6 and since I won't tow (use my F350 diesel dually for that) feel that this is a nice ride. If I was towing though I would recommend the Hemi even though it calls for mid range gas (89).


Drive pick up is a bit weak but sport seemed to work as well as my old 4.7 which swollowed a valve at 175,000 miles and bit the dust.

Did U use the paddles in sport or drive or both

Using the paddles puts you in sport mode and that's probably what happed when you got the CEL. Accidentally bumped the down shift paddle and overreved the engine to cause the temporary CEL.

I've used the paddles in both modes but for 2-3 gear shifts. Then back to regular drive mode.

I don't think so. Since you control the shift point it would make no sense.

This is probably what happened because when I was driving from dealership, I was playing with the Sirrius radio presets on the back of the steering wheel and the paddles had not been explained to me so I may have pushed one of the paddles by accident . The next time I put the shifter into sport mode it showed 3 but now is clear so when I took it to dealer they may have raised the paddle to reset it.

The dealer on the test drive did not have me use the paddles at all so maybe I can find a tutorial on line as to proper use and when to use. I have to deal with sand and mud but not snow.

The paddles make the Jeep a "Manual" transmission. Thats all. They allow you to shift when you want. Going up a long long hill and you want to keep it in "4th" then use the paddles. Want to race someone and shift gears yourself? Paddles.

Pressing them anytime puts the truck into sport and sets it into the correct gear for that speed. So if you are going 50, and hit the "-" paddle, it will probably go into 4th or 5th gear and stay till you shift.

Want to get out of paddle mode, press the + for 2 seconds (or pull the shifter back) and you should go back into normal Drive

Seriously, I'm not trying to be a dick here or anything, but all of this is explained in detail in the owner's manual. I know a lot of people don't like reading the instructions when they're putting together the kid's toys, but a 40 to 50 grand adult toy deserves a little more respect. Then when you break something, at least you know why it broke. Just sayin'.

It is difficult reading the owners manual when driving home from the dealership for the first time and have to pull to the side of the road. But then maybe you are a wonder who does Text messages while driving

I don't even use a cellphone in my vehicle unless I pull off the road. I've never text messaged anyone. I downloaded and read the manual from cover to cover weeks before my JGC was delivered. It appears you had the time to post questions on this forum, didn't you think to look in the manual before you did that? I said I wasn't trying to be a dick, but it seems you'd rather attack me than take my advice. Of course your not looking for advice, your just looking for the easy way to get your questions answered. Just sayin'.

Don't take it personal. Since my blood amonia levels are high I CRS (cant remember s+*&) very well
