WK2 battery charging

Didn't see a good source thread on this so maybe this could be one.

I have a 2012 V8 that I want to ensure has full charge in cold as I do very short trips sometimes..

I have a 20A max smart charger / maintainer and plan on hooking it up to the engine bay jump start posts.

The manual says disconnect the battery connections for "fast charging" the battery in the car, which of course, would mean using the battery terminals directly. I don't know what the definition of a "fast charger" is but I assume it's more like 50A with some temp monitoring??

So please chime in as to whether or not a 20A peak (but this will drop as soon as near capacity is reached) charge is OK through the remote posts.

(just did this on my wifes BMW remotely without issue and her car was at 12.2V initially- which is 50% charge!).

I just keep mine on the Battery Tender - nice steady slow charge for long battery life.

the grand cherokee uses a AGM (absorbant glass mat) battery. voltage should never exceed 14.4V while charging.
an automatic battery tender connected to the jump start posts should help keep it charged.

You should be fine as long as the battery is charged when you connect to it. I don't know the make/ model charger you are using but by using the term "maintainer" I assume it will do so at less than 1.5-2.5 amps. That is a maintenance current. A true "smart" charger will exercise the battery and allow slight charge/ discharge. A true smart charger will only apply as much current as is needed.
My advice (for simplicity sake) is to pick up a Battery Tender at your local hardware store or motorcycle shop (buy LOCAL!). They come with pre terminated ring terminal/ SAE pig tails. You fasten the rings on the + and - under the hood and run the SAE connector wherever you like. You can also make your own, like I did, and place it in the tow hook spot so the hood stays closed.

thanks all. I think the issue really is heat as evil twin implies as he recommended not charging a very discharged battery.. AGM of course don't vent often by design but heat and venting could be issue.

I have a Griots charger that is "smart" and can charge up to 20A or 2A at max but then nearly zero or exercise at full charge, so it's pretty safe. I like it so far. I really like the battery type button making it clear it knows what battery you are charging: std, AGM, or gel.

The good news is when I checked volts and charge with it it was clear the battery is fully charged and in good shape despite many short trips and heated everything on most of the time (seat, sw).. Seems like a good charging system and battery.

I totally agree that if it was a dead battery I'd probably pull it out to charge it at 20A for safety.
