WK2 Oddity - Shifts from "P" to "1" directly

New WK2 owner. Oddity - 2nd time in the FIRST week:

1. Jump in the car, and start
2. Move shift lever from "Park" to "Drive"
3. As I drive off, I realize I am in 1st Gear
4. Quickly bump the shifter a few times to reach "D"

Is this a known issue?

I tried a few times to see how easy it is to accidently shift from "P" to "1". It takes some deliberate effort. I cannot imagine this is an operator issue, but who knows?

Any ideas?

Re: WK2 Oddity - Shifts from "P" to "1" directly

My guess is that the switch that closes when you move the lever to the left is faulty or incorrectly installed, so it can register when you pull the lever to D. Holding the lever to the far left for half a second will "select the best gear for engine braking," which when you're not yet moving is 1.

Re: WK2 Oddity - Shifts from "P" to "1" directly

A few tests, shifting from "P" to "D", while biasing the shifter to the left, does not seem to cause this issue.

I though maybe it was due to left-pressure applied by me on the shifter during the shift motion. My test show it dropping into "D" every time regardless of left-bias.

Will pay more attention to my shifting motion looking for some correlation.
