I have had concerns about my 2012 spec GC Limited (Coil suspension) straight line stability on broken surfaces from brand new. The bumping, shockie rattle noise has also been present from day one and I can't help but think they are conjointed somehow.
Been to the local Chrysler dealer about it before 1st service was due and they looked at it and said it was fine, where less than helpful. I then started corrospondance with Jeep Customer Service Australian Head Office over 4 emails and 7 months ago to no avail.
I had an original theory that the factory fitted low profile 50 series tyres combined with the stiff coil spring rate was the cause of the problem. However many other manufacturers have rigid suspension vehicles riding on low profile tyres and they handle in silence with poise and manners in rough roads situations.
I see that other owners have been talking about self levelling shoclies being the noise issue, My shockies are standard non leveling (I think the headlight are self levelling instead) but I still have annoying bump anf thump sound transmission through the back floor of the vehicle.
If you drive the vehicle on the freeway it is not a problem, but hit a pothole or tackle some corrigated dirt road and you need to hang on as the tail end wants to jump out from under you at reasonable (not rediculous) speeds.
I have had the vehicle almost a year now and have 23,000klms on the dial so I have the following thoughts.
1/ If you run lower air pressure in the tires the ride quality improves dramatically, (but the low pressure warning signal in the dash panel drives you mad).
Q, So perhaps going back to 18 inch rims and putting 60 series tyres will help things improve?
2/ The noisy rear end could be faulty shockies or non forgiving rubber bushing and spacers in the suspension design. I also think the very thin low quality noise suspression (sound deadening) materials are a contributinfg factor.
Q. Would replacement high quality shockies help both the noise and ride control problems?
3/ The vehicle will react in an erratic manner to uneven surface interruptions in the road surface at highway speeds (100klm/hr), from both the front and rear end, perhaps the whole suspension geometry needs reviewing.
If anyone has experienced any of these suspension issues and/or had a breakthrough with any of these issues, I would be very happy to hear from you.
You need to find a new dealer. The problem is well known. You should be able to find other threads on this. There are a number of Technical Service Bulletins out on this. Get your dealer to look up TSBs 17-002-10a, 17-001-11 and 17-002-13 and he will see that there really is an issue with the shocks.

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

It took two and half week to get my car back from the service area due to a Back Order in the shocks to replace the sound coming from the back. I will pick up today and report back what part number they use and hopefully drive this coming days the mandatory 700-1000 miles to see if the problem was solved.

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

I appreciate your time with this issue once again, I recontacted my local dealer with the TSB numbers you provided and amazingly there is now a rear shockie fix available for me as of last week!
I am pushing to have them installed this week sometime Feb 19th onwards, and have a 2,000 klm road trip on next week so will let you know the outcome after this. Good luck with yours.
Best regards
Wazza.

Hi Wazza

Do you have a TSB number for the rear shocker fix for you laredo?

We have a 3ltd 2011 limited with the same problem - done 24000k's, had old TSB's done but did not fix, so shockers were replaced, problem came back after about 50000 k's - Chrysler now won't do anything about the problem. Come to the forums today in a last ditch effort before going to ACCC gazza

Here you go, but you won't like it. The fix no longer calls for replacement, just cleaning, greasing and RTV.

I had my shocks replaced about 6 months and 6000 miles ago. They replaced both shocks (with the original PN's), replaced the end-of-travel "bumpers" and removed/cleaned/lubricated the rear anti-sway bar.

So far, so good (knock on wood) the noise has not returned.

Justal13, that TSB does not relate to the load leveling rear shocks, which is his thread is about

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

I installed a set of these shocks onto my laredo so I was able to see the difference between the shock mounts for the SLS and the normal duty. I am convinced that clunking you are hearing is due to the shock mount design of the nivomat.

The shock mount of the normal duty is better designed, it is lined with rubber that protrudes over the top and has a metal plate that covers the top of the mount which make contact with the rubber.

So in essence the mount on the normal duty fits better and acts as vibration damper.

The SLS shock does not have the metal plate and is not lined with the rubber so it would be more likely to transmit sound into the wheel well metal that does not have any kind of sound deadner on it.

I am proposing a simple fix for these poorly designed mounts on the nivomats.

I am planning to use the metal plates for the normal duty shock mount but you will have to remove the four location tabs from the plate to work with the SLS mounts.

Then I am going to trim a poly urethane bushing to fit snuggly into the top of the SLS shock mount.

The idea is to use the bushing and plate to put pressure on top of the washer in the shock mount to limit any movement of the shock shaft in the mount and absorb any noise that would be transmittes to the wheel well.

I am waiting for the bushings to arrive when they do I will share my findings whether it is a successful fix for this issue or not.

That sounds like the heck of a plan! I agree that Chrysler should take care about but I will not wait until my beard reaches the ground. Would greatly appreciate if you could keep us posted and take a couple of pictures. While I can hear you, I really would like to see what can be done. My idea was to put some kind of rubber mat between the mount and the body.
I personally think that the idea with the bushing is counterproductive as you create an other contact point between shock and wheel well.
