Ok, got that but just the free swinging is damped doesn't necessarily mean it damps the noise going through the mount. Let me see if I can build an analogy; knock a wrench on a metal pipe and it gives a nice ping. If I hold it in my hand it doesn't ping because it is damped, right. Nevertheless, I still can feel the knock in my hand because it is transferred through the metal. Now, if you attach some kind if resonance body (like the car body) to the pipe you wouldn't hear the ping but the knock on pipe very load. So in order to prevent that you have to acoustically isolate the resonance body (e.g. with rubber between them). You see what I mean?

Lastly... Have any of you been able to recreate the noise with the vehicle parked and on jack stands/lift? If so can you post a video of the specific area causing the noise?
Tried to replicate it parked, on stands; no chance only when it is moving. Guess there is somehow play in shock lever to the mount causing this knocking. Therefore the idea with the bushing might be the right approach.

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

Hi Guys, and thanks for your input. Side note, my jeep has the normal - and not the quadra lift shockers.

Attached is my latest reply ferom jeep. They say that the noise is not from wear, and they imply that the noise would have been there from day 1 as it is a standard noise. funnythen that we (who are very tuned into the noise), didnot hear the noise again untill about 3000km after the new replacement shockers were fitted.

We will; be going in to see jeep tomorrow, cheers gazzzzzza

I am confused; you say that your Jeep has the normal shocks but the letter says it has the self leveling ones? There are several TSBs out for the normal shocks to deal with the noise, some for the SRT8 but none for the SLS. The response is what I heard to, I just waited some more thousand miles and it went loader, found a street with the required pavement to replicate the noise every time, put the technician in the car and demonstrated the noise. He agreed that it is present; if he would have said that the noise is normal, I would have made the deal to change the SLS on my cost, drive with him the same street and see if the noise went away. If yes, the arrangement would have been that they pay it (just get that in writing ;-)).

If you have the SLS, you only can downgrade to standard shocks (don't forget to change the spring to or your back will sag). Or you join us and think about own solutions to it. Finally, you can just return the Jeep.

I am waiting for the first 2014 to appear, shocks are the same, mounting potentially, too just takes about 3000-5000 miles and some warm temperature. If they don't appear, we simply adopt the shock mounting.

That letter is not even from Chrysler/Jeep Direct. It is just your Sales people in that dealer giving you a letter to cover their Arses

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

I have the standard self levelling shocks, and not the ooptional extra quadra lift shocks. Our dealer tried last years TSB's but as they did not fix the problem, they replaced the shocks. After about 5000k's the noise returned and the service manager could easily hear it after about 100m from the dealership. Going in to discuss with the dealership tomorrow - dont like that they are flately refusing any further action even though there is now a 2013 TSB.

There is no TSB for the self leveling shocks only for standard (not leveling) and SRT8 shocks! SLS and standard shocks have a different shock mount.

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

this is all very confusing. I have the standard shocks that come with the 3l TD jeep grand cherokee - the specs in the sales booklet just describe them as shocks. We didn't fit the "quadra-lift shocks" as they cost a few thousand more.

Let me help you here;
- Standard shocks for every WK2 without the TowPackage
- Self-Leveling Shocks (SLS) for WK2 with Tow Package
- Quadra -Lift are the air springs or height adjustable
- SRT8 has the active shocks (can be hardened)

You have TSBs out for the standard & SRT8 shocks, nothing for the SLS although several versions are out the last one ends with ...AD.

Here is a little more detail:

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

All export WK2 are SLS except for Quadra-Lift. This means all WK2 in Australia have SLS unless you have Quadra-Lift.

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

Just to be a bit testicle, yes as Suthers says, "- Quadra -Lift are the air springs or height adjustable", however there are front and rear shocks as well. The front shocks are incorporated in the air-spring strut. The rear shocks are separate to the air-spring in a more or less standard configuration. The shocks are non-SLS.

Re: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

thanks guys. So as live in australia & don't have quadra lift, then I must have SLS - bummer - means no fix to my problem.

Went to my dealer today & he has agreed to perform the 2013 TSB -guess this won't be happening now!
