1st oil change question 3.6

At what mileage our you guys doing your 1st oil change ? And are you using full synthetic the first time? I have 1200 miles on wife's 2015 altitude and I am thinking of changing the oil. Is 1200 miles to early or should I wait a while.

I did my first right at 1200 and moved to pennzoil ultra platinum synthetic. Changes after have been at 6000-7000. Synthetic isnt necessary but it has gotten so cheap now a days 5quart jug of pennzoil ultra platinum synthetic is onnly like $27 i plan to keep it long term so it cant hurt.

1st oil change question 3.6

I'll have mine done every 3k regardless... under my Mopar service contract (added to my VIN at n/c) I get 12 free standard oil changes. After those run out I'll switch to synthetic at 5-6k intervals.

Re: 1st oil change question 3.6

Personally, I follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change interval in the owner's manual. For MY14-15, that would be 10,000 miles or one year or when the JGC says it needs changes, whichever comes first, unless the vehicle is being used for certain "heavy duty" activities, such as taxi service, also as detailed in the manual.

I use full synthetic and for my MY12 V8, the change interval is 8K miles.

Re: 1st oil change question 3.6

Thanks always change my oil early from factory. By buddies 2010 srt8 blew a motor when it had 1000 miles on it. It was bone dry. He was not happy. With this 3.6 wasn't sure if it was different.

Re: 1st oil change question 3.6

I ran the factory oil until 6000 miles.
Would have gone to the recommended 8000 miles, but the vehicle sat on the dealer lot (with short runs moving the vehicle around the lot) and the oil change light came on earlier than 8000.

I switched to synthetic oil at that time and run the oil for 8000 miles between changes and never have to add a drop.

I think a lot of people that have oil burning issues are causing it because they change out the factory oil too soon before the rings setup.

Just my $0.02.
You can disagree, but I'm sticking to my opinion and will always run the factory oil for at least 5k before changing it out.

I've done that on my last 3 new vehicles and have never had any of them consume oil and one of them was the Subaru 3.6 liter H6 engine which has had a lot of complaints about oil consumption.

Re: 1st oil change question 3.6

Todd3.6 funny you should say that because the reason I asked the question is that I was watching a YouTube video on an oil change on a 14 3.6 and the guy doing the vid said you should run the factory oil for 3 to 5K to ensure the rings set properly. Never heard that before.

Re: 1st oil change question 3.6

I changed my 2014 GC Limited 3.6 at 1500 miles, then 7500, then every 7500 thereafter. Did the same routine with my wife's 2011 Land Rover. I use full synthetic Mobil 1 0w20 or Castrol Edge 0w20 in both and never see any usage/level drop between changes. I'm at 53,000 miles in the Jeep now. My oil monitor calls for changes about every 10,000 miles (i.e. when I change at 7500 miles it says I have 20-25% life left) but 7500 is easy to remember/keep watch over and I use the same interval in all our cars. I just don't like going longer than that and tend to keep cars well past 100,000 miles. But you can find support for about any oil change interval or oil type you want to use within reason. It comes down to personal preference.

By chance do you have a link to that video.

I have a Mopar deal similar to antsjeep where I get every second oil change for free if I change oil every 3K. I've just hit 3K and was considering getting my first free oil change even though my computer says I have 60% oil life remaining.

Could not get the link to load. On youtube search 2011-2105 oil change procedure by BSG automotive.
