2012 5.7L 6 Speed Quradra Drive Shifting/Performance

It is well known that the shifting/power transfer of the 6 speed transmission is dismal as Jeep's effort to enhance fuel economy at the expense of performance. Factory TSB software updates have minimal improvement. I found the best way to improve city driving performance is to operate in tow/haul mode on the transmission. This will hold the lower gears longer and will down shift better instead of upshifting too soon and keeping the transmission in higher gears at lower speeds. I also believe that the ECO mode is disabled giving full 8 cylinder power at all times. Gas mileage does surly suffer but gas is cheap. Why the hell did you get the Hemi in the first place? Give it a roll and see if it works for you.

Re: 2012 5.7L 6 Speed Quradra Drive Shifting/Performance

I had a 2012 Overland V6 and you think the V8 is bad?? My 2012 Overland was terrible. Wrong gears all at the wrong times. Needless to say I'm now in a 2014 Summit V8 and friggin LOVE the 8spd

Re: 2012 5.7L 6 Speed Quradra Drive Shifting/Performance

Well I had a 2012 Overland V8.

The power & performance were horrible from a stop. Once you got the beast moving, it did a lot better. Overall I was disappointed in that vehicle's overall performance. It felt slower and less powerful then the 2005 V8 powered Toyota 4Runner it replaced.

When the new 8-Speed transmission arrived, folks kept praising it over the 6-Speed. Well I finally decided to test drive one towards the beginning of this year...

WOW! That transmission makes the entire vehicle feel different!

It was the final ingredient that helped me decide to trade in the 2012 for a 2015.

Re: 2012 5.7L 6 Speed Quradra Drive Shifting/Performance

I have zero issues with the performance of my MY12 Summit with the Hemi and only ever use tow/haul when I'm actually towing. I see no reason to compromise fuel economy with that selection and if I want a little more pep for some strange reason (I'm a conservative driver) Sport Mode works just fine.

Re: 2012 5.7L 6 Speed Quradra Drive Shifting/Performance

My 2012 Overland 5.7 drives great ever since I had the transmission update done a while ago; before that it was sluggish and back then I did use Tow mode on occasion. Now if I need power I just press my foot down gradually and it accelerates real well. Sport mode and especially manually down shifting helps immensely when I want to really get more out of the Hemi. Love the Hemi. The sales guy that sold my parents their 2014 Limited V6 noticed all of the mods I did to mine including the HEMI badge and thought it was a nice touch.

Re: 2012 5.7L 6 Speed Quradra Drive Shifting/Performance

I may be wrong, but I don't think the sport mode does anything with the shifting pattern. It should, but I do not feel any change in that mode at all. I believe it only disables the EST, distributes more torque to the rear wheels, and lowers the vehicle of those equipped with the fancy Quadra Lift suspension, which I'm not a fan of either.

Re: 2012 5.7L 6 Speed Quradra Drive Shifting/Performance

Sport mode is supposed to adjust the shifting patterns to make shifts happen later, if I'm not mistaken, so that perceived and real performance is enhanced. That said, the last TSB I had applied (one of the very few that is reversible) brought the shifting patter under non-Sport (Normal) mode closer to the Sport Mode. This was the so called "fish bite" TSB. The downside is a slight hit in fuel economy, but the peppiness was immediately noticable to me.

Shift points in a 2012 in sport mode are very noticable

Yeah, they noticeably suck. That's why I run in tow/haul mode, which seems to shift marginally better. I guess the 8 speed fixes most of the issues..or at least I don't see the same level of complaints about it here.

It does. The 8spd and the V8 in the 2014+ is like a dream come true. It's like those two were made for each other lol. Each driving mode works perfectly and has never disappointed me. ECO keeps fuel economy in mind but yet still keeps the vehicle in the right gear at the right times. Eco off is a noticeable difference that brings the shift points up a bit and keeps the car out of 4cyl mode. Sport mode just changes everything! For an SUV it's a blast to drive in sport. Sounds awesome, shifts so quick, and feels surprisingly quick. I don't use them all that often, but the paddle shifters work very good in this ZF tranny. I have had other automatics where the paddles were a joke.
I really feel like Jeep listened to its customers and their complaints on the 11-13 years and addressed them very well going into the refreshed/updated 2014.

I think you guys are going a bit too heavy on the throttle and not letting the computer do its thing...I have a V6 13 and sport mode with auto stick makes a huge difference. It's all about where you keep the RPMs. I find that if I stomp on the gas, it goes nowhere but starting off in 1st in Sport with moderate throttle , I'm gone!! Ok, maybe not SRT gone but much quicker than on Autopilot!
