2014 Grand Cherokee 3.0 Muffler Delete

As opposed to spending $500-$1800 on a bolt on exhaust system for my 3.0 diesel, I opted to simply remove the mufflers and replace with a straight pipe. Considering there is a DPF and 3' long CAT upstream, I suspected there wouldn't be a huge change in sound and I was right. There are no quantifiable gains and only a slight increase in the exhaust sound at idle, cruising or WOT. Hopefully I'll see some long term MPG results but the only short term advantage is the weight reduction of 21.47 lbs (mufflers=30.77; tips, flanges = 9.3).
NOTES:
  1. The 3.0 diesel dual exhaust ID is 1.9" (48 mm) regardless of what anyone says.
  2. I put flanges on each side to aid in R&R of exhaust system components later (many ways to skin this cat, of course). Or if I ever needed to go back to stock it would be easy.
  3. The OEM pipe is approx 2" OD, so we welded a 2" long section of 2.25" pipe over it and then welded on the 2.25" flange.
  4. Components are as follows:
(2) 10" L, 2.25" ID, 4" OD Jones SS rolled end exhaust tips, $50
(4) 2.25" x 1/4" thk exhaust flanges, $24
(2) 2.25" Vibrant exhaust gaskets, $12
(4) 3/8" x 1.5" grade 8, black oxide bolts & nuts, $1.76
(2) 2.25" x 24" sections of aluminized pipe (included in installation)
(4) 3/8" x 11" straight solid rod exhaust hangers, $12
Mid-south exhaust installation, welding, paint etc. $178

Do you think this modification will affect the smog certification? Very interested on the sound as well.

Not a chance as the mufflers have no effect on emissions.

If past the catalyst and last O2 sensor, the main effect would be on noise emissions (measured in some states).

Here is a parked video & sound. I remote started it and then killed it by not pressing the brake and ign button before mashing the throttle. Pretty quiet but a bit of diesel rumble and turbo whine.

Thanks for the clip. Do you have an aftermarket intake?
