2014 oil filter wobble?

Hi guys, changing the oil in my JGC right now. After I snapped the new filter (68191349AA) into place firmly, I noticed that I can move it back and forth in there. I totally forget if I could do this with the old one as I was focused on pulling it out -- is the wobble normal? With the cap on I'm sure it's not going to move around in there, but I just wanted to be sure.

Re: 2014 oil filter wobble?

Im pretty sure that I have read somewhere there is two different filters, and that they are very close in appearance but not identical. Are you sure you have the correct filter?

Re: 2014 oil filter wobble?

Yes, definitely.

I watched a filter change video for a 2012 Wrangler which uses the old style filter (left in the attached photo) which secures to the cap using two clips. When snapped into place, the filter didn't move for him.

The new filter (right) doesn't snap into the cap; it snaps on the inside of the housing for the filter on/in the engine. However, before the cap goes on, the filter can easily be moved up, down, left, and right (but not in and out). Based on the design I think this makes sense, and again with the cap on I doubt it will move, but I just wanted to make sure it's not a bad sign that it's doing that without the cap on.
