3.73 gears

I am trying to find out where I can buy 3.73 gears for my wk2 overland. I have tried researching but have found nothing. All I know is that the rear is 230mm and front is 195mm. Apparently they have changed to the metric system in the wk2s. I obviously do not want to go to the dealer cause all of them are a bunch of ripoffs. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Re: 3.73 gears

The WK2 axles are listed here: http://wk2jeeps.com/wk2_maintenance.htm#FAXLE

The STR8 has 3.70 rears in its rear 230mm axle. Fronts are either 3.07 or 3.45 for all models. I dunno of anyone making aftermarket gears.

If the SRT8 has 3.70s in the rear it must also have 3.70s in the front. You can't have different ratios between the front and rears. Well you probably could with some super sophisticated transfer case/center differential but to my knowledge it doesn't exist in any production car I'm aware of.

I'm hoping the 2014s with the 8 speed allow the use of a better final drive ratio.

Re: 3.73 gears

Well an open dif transfer case could easily handle different axle ratios and many manufactures build in a slight difference for look and feel. A locking case won't work all that well, however. Anyway the Str8 specs do say that the front is a 3.70 ratio with a 7.7 (195) ring gear, the rears is also 3.70 with a 9 (230) ring gear. Not sure why WK2jeeps.com doesn't list it on the page referenced.... but my bad.

There are some discount dealers on line (mopar-wholesale.com for one), I dunno if you can pick up a SRT8 ring and pinion as a separate part. You can get the entire dif assembly for like $800 each.

Re: 3.73 gears

Would I be able to buy a universal brand like a Dana for example and would it work?

Re: 3.73 gears

You may want to look at some of the STR8 forums, but it does not seem that the aftermarket is making any gears in the new metric size, just not any demand. Some of the WK owners swap out with ford axles (~$5000), which are solid and won't work for the independent axle WK2.

If the CRD uses a different axles/dif housing than the STR8, never mind.
