Maybe its just me, But I feel like the 5.7L motor doesn't sound like its a well oiled machine.. its very diesel like sounding. Lets say when your driving next to a wall or in a tunnel and you have the windows down, you slowly give it some gas and you can clearly hear the motor ticking or valves opening and closing or something.... does anyone else hear this stuff or is it just me?
Don't get me wrong, the exhaust and intake notes are beautiful and she feel likes shes running like a well oiled machine.. just not sounding like one.
How many miles? My 5.7 sounded like yours when new, and gradually smoothed out after awhile. I have about 13K miles on it now, and she sounds very smooth.
I think I have about 14k ... I almost want to feel like its normal because it feels and drive so smooth and obvious no check engine light and you can't hear it at all when the windows are up.
The unique sound of the Hemi never disappears totally, and you're correct - it does sound sort of like a diesel, especially when new. Have you done your 1st oil change yet? If so, what kind of oil? I noticed mine quieted down a lot fairly soon after I replaced the oil/filter at around 11K miles.
I think i have done three or four so far.. I was using Mobil1 EP up until my last oil change when I switched to that new Pennzoil ultra platinum made from natural gas...
I think I know what u mean as far as diesel sounding. I'm currently at 2800 miles or so. I honestly prefer this stock note than what my camaro SS sounded stock.
Im dropping the car off at the deal in October when I have to go away to a wedding for a few days, im gonna have them give the car a once over amongst a few other things, like recalls and software updates..ect..
But I have a feeling this is just what a badass American V8 sounds like and I have to get used to it.
Mine has all the hemi "sounds" at 14k which I love but I have a noisy water pump that adds that huffed bearing sound. Otherwise she purrs with the Amsoil 5-20 Signature Series I feed her. She munches an extra qt every 3.5k or so.
I tried to get a video but all I can hear is wind noise, no matter if I hold it inside or outside the car ... I will have to try and get a video this weekend, I know the perfect spot to try.. or maybe have someone old the camera while I drive by.
Nope just a "whoosh" sound coming from your credit card as you select it over 87 which your manual recommends...The ECM will automatically pull or add tuming, adjust fuel delivery, etc based upon what the system is actually getting. It may take some miles for it to fully adjust but it definitely will. The extra energy in the 93 will just go unused out the tailpipe...
For all I know this noise could be perfectly normal.. As this is my first V8 and my first american car... The truck is running great, accelerates smooth, has tons of power, upshifts and downshifts smooth, exhaust sounds great, gets good gas mileage, no extended crank or hesitation, never got any CEL'S.
As for changing directions, swerving, changing gears with the paddle shifter.. Nothing changed .. Its definitely coming from the motor not the tranny or anything else. .
I'm gonna try and find a tunnel or get a friend to hold the camera.
There is at least one thread that talks about octane and IIRC the Hemi is not as efficient using the 93. I use both 89 & 87 and haven't picked up on a noticeable difference in performance from either nor clicking.
For sure, since the ECU is programmed for 89, 93 will not combust properly and run less efficiently. You will most likely get worse gas mileage. Using the 87 might (mine does) cause a slight knock until the ECU senses the knock and pulls timing.
If towing, 89 should b used and 87 would probably give more of a knock under load.
This is for '14 only as '13 and earlier call for 87 I think.
Just loaded my 91 octane custom tune from Sean at hemifever this evening. I'll run a log this weekend and have him tweak it next week. Only did a few test runs but definitely smoother shifting and more responsive throttle. Worth every penny to me at least.

Its the infamous HEMI TICK. Search google and you'll see what I mean. My 2010 Hemi GC never did it but my 2012 Challanger RT sounded like a ticking time bomb! It seems some do it and some don't and some not as bad as others. Its normal and nothing to be concerned about. As far as refinement and having both motors the 3.6 is a lot more smoother and quieter but then again you really don't buy a muscle car engine for refinement
Thanks, after doing some searching on that topic, I think I found my answers to why im getting that noise
1) Intake and exhaust valves do not have any kind of cushioning from the fuel. Fuel use to have higher amounts of sulfur and tetra ethyl or tetra methyl lead to lubricate and cushion intake and exhaust valves in the old days. When EPA decided to go to unleaded fuels, hardened valves and seats were produced trying to deal with the lack of lubricant. This was adequate at best, but did allow engines to live longer than if they had soft valves and seats. However, when they went to ethyl alcohol, that all changed. Alcohol absorbs moisture and strips lubricity. That was bad enough, but when they reduced the sulfur content from 130 parts per million (ppm) to 30 ppm, it really produced a perfect storm. Both the intake and exhaust valves are now hitting against the valve seats with no cushioning at all. This causes wear, and then of course....noise or TICK.
2) Fuel injectors depend on at least 70 ppm of sulfur to stay alive. When EPA went to the ethyl alcohol and less than 30 ppm, they have no cushioning allowing them to click or tick also while building up gum and varnish. This restricts the flow of fuel and turns the vaporized spray pattern into an atomized spray pattern. Atomized fuel doesn't burn as well, and helps wash down into the cylinders and wipes out the detergents and dispersants much faster. This is the second part of the Hemi Tick.
My Acura 3.7 had the same tick at idle. I could only hear it in the garage or next to the retaining wall in my driveway. Neither the Acura 3.7 or Hemi 5.7 tick under acceleration. Both sound awesome when floored.
