hmm, that's good oil your using too. why don't you try using the 5W-30 synthetic and see if that decreases.

im running 5W-30 Mobil1 EP, and I have a catch can. after about 2K miles, my catch can was about 50% full. Im about to do another oil change, I will report on my findings on how much oil is on the stick and in the can.

Side note- iv had a few start ups with blue smoke, and ever time it was on level ground. I feel the blue smoke start up happens only after short trips on a cold start, or maybe WOT.

Re: 5.7L Hemi oil guzzler

^^^ - Not sure, but I think that Jeep specifies 5-20 oil because heavier weight oils could possibly mess up the MDS system. I do have a catch-can that I haven't installed yet, that could catch some of the excess oil being sucked into the intake. I'll have to get that done ...

yeah Chrysler does call for 5w-20 for proper MDS function .. But I switched over to 5W-30 at 3,000 miles and I have about for 7K on the truck now in the winter with no issues with MDS.. and there is some guy in Switzerland using 5W-50... idk why he is, I tried asking but the language barrier was in the way.

BTW there is a TSB about smoke on startup .. im bringing my truck in for that and a few others...

Chrysler's official oil consumption guidelines are that anything below the following are considered normal and do not warrant repairs:

For engines with less than 50,000 miles: 1qt per 2000 miles.

For engines with 50,000 or more miles: 1qt per 500 miles.

Engines with less than 7500 miles should not be tested for excessive oil consumption as oil consumption may be higher during break-in and early miles.

You should not be losing that much through the PCV system. I've run a catch can for 5000 miles and at most it's a quarter to half full (which is around 1/4 of a qt. Your results may vary if you are more aggressive with the throttle.

Not sure, but I think there is something published that replaces the oil-pan, to help prevent excessive smoke after parking on an incline, etc. I don't seem to have the excessive smoke problem though - go figure ... ?

Guess that makes my, '3 quarts used after 8,000 miles', OK then - thanks for the info.

It's taken forever but they will be removing the head and checking out the valve seals, gaskets and guides. Any predictions?

Re: 5.7L Hemi oil guzzler

^^^ - How much oil were you using, that would justify all the work being done?

^^^ - Ouch! Hope they get it straightened out for you soon! Let us know what they actually do to solve the problem. BTW, what kind of oil were you using?
