There's actually some good opinions here. Just skip over all the cock fighting.

When I bought my overland there were about 16 on the lot and all were V8, at least according to the inventory. One V6 had come in that morning from a dealer to dealer trade and it was exactly what I wanted except for the color. I've grown to love the silver.

I am looking at 2012 overland
If you're towing a lot I'd probably opt for the Hemi. Otherwise just drive them and see which you prefer. It's actually hard to go wrong, IMO.

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

I have had both since Dec. '011. The V6 is very smooth, quiet. A good engine I think for open road, traveling. My only issue was stop and go traffic, could be sluggish and struggled to get out of it. IMO I think it was more the tranmission mapping than engine power.

I've had the V8 about a week. It's not over whelming power like you might think. To me it just seems to have more torque and responds better to stop and go traffic.

Mixed city, highway driving I was getting 19.6 with the V6, so far on the first tank I'm getting 16.4 with the V8.

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

I just drove up to my mountain cabin and back, a 1/2 weekend date with my wife, no kids or dogs. I traveled US 421 under the Blue Ridge Parkway, to Boone, then SR105 down to the Wautauga River, past Grandfather Mountain then up to the Eastern Continental Divide, then climb the mountain to our place. Net elevation change is 4100 feet, but there's a lot of up and downs. I drive 4 to 10 over most of the way, passing the slow pokes when opposing traffic or climbing lanes allows.

On the trip up I got 20.5 mpg, and on the way back, raining the entire way, I averaged 26.9.

You are right. Pentastar's problem is not the engine itself at this point, it's that 5 sp transmission. 8 sp one will help greatly.

I highly doubt that. The only downside to the V8 is that it is significantly more expensive to operate. Its up to you to decide whether the performance benefits for you and your situation are worth that cost.

I don't doubt that his friends would say that. I don't doubt that they know what they are talking about either.

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

With MDS on the 5.7L, and you drive it so the MDS is on approximately 50% of the time - then the 5.7 is a V6 on average anyway ((V8 + V4)/2). Therefore this entire discussion is moot.

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

Thank you all for your input. I drove both v6 and v8 , both are fine. To me v6 drives more like a car and v8 feels more like a truck. What I was asking , if anyone aware about V8 having more mechanical issues ( reliability, malfunction ) compare to v6 ?

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

Ditto, I would expect both to be about the same in terms of reliability. Obviously the V8 has the MDS engine management system which is an additional feature, additional stuff increases risk of failure, but I personally wouldn't be worried about it.

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

Just remember people come to the internet to gripe, the actual problems with the vehicles are few and far between.
