You're probably right that MDS doesn't make a world of difference since it seems to operate in conditions where you wouldn't be using a ton of fuel anyway. However, I believe the MDS on the '09-up Hemi engines works over a broader rpm range than on the '05-'09s.

Here are some numbers from Motor Trend's October, 2010 issue in which they pitted the '11 GC Overland and Limited against the '10 Land Rover LR4 and Toyota 4Runner.

V8 Overland:
0-60: 7.6s
Passing, 45 - 65mph: 4.0s
1/4 mile: 15.4 @ 92.2mph

V6 Limited:
0-60: 8.4s
Passing, 45 - 65mph: 4.4s
1/4 mile: 16.3 @ 86.6mph

And for comparison sake:

4Runner Trail:
0-60: 7.6s
Passing, 45-65mph: 3.9s
1/4 mile: 15.8 @ 88mph

LR4:
0-60: 6.9s
Passing, 45-65mph: 3.4s
1/4 mile: 15.3 @ 91.2mph

Nothing wrong with this statement. There is a difference between stating your viewpoint, and denigrating the viewpoints of others.

"Arguing on the internet is fun". You must have a lot of spare time on your hands, and/or you must be very stifled in your "real" life. I don't need to come on an Internet forum and be rude to a bunch of people for "fun".

Anyways...glad you bought the Jeep since every other manufacturer of midsized SUVs have dumped their V8 offerings. Keep it in good shape, because Jeep will be next. The V8 motor in everyday passenger vehicles is a thing of the past.

if the v8 is going away, I am glad I get to drive one around everyday now until that happens.

Our ideas of fun are different then. I work in IT, so yes, I spend a good amount of time on the interweb.

And I probably won't keep my Jeep in great shape. I buy vehicles to use and have fun with. I have had my JGC for a year now and am already thinking what I want next. Maybe a Ford Raptor or something like that.

This pretty much nails the troll to the tree, thanks.

...and so is the HEMI for a V8 in a jeep (excluding the SRT), the slow part and joke that is.

I drove both for a week and ended up going with the V6. The hemi would be nice for towing heavy loads, but the V6 has done fine to date and I'm more impressed with the HWY mpg when cruising an easy 70mph now that it's warmed up and no more winter gas. I've recorded 25 and 26mpg the past two weeks on 200mile business trips. I was not overally impressed with the HEMI...still seemed doggy and I preferred the lighter more nimble feeling of the V6. Would I have been happy with the Hemi, sure.

I do agree the hemi feels sluggish compared to other v8's but that is more computer related than power related. Once the tuner comes out, a lot of that sluggishness should be gone, hopefully. The transmissions in the v8 is absolute garbage IMO also. I think that adds a lot of the perceived sluggishness of the v8.

MPG is not a factor for everyone. Personally, I could care less what the MPG of a vehicle is. I buy things to have fun with, if I wanted to be practical I would ride my pedal bike everywhere.

I honestly cannot tell the difference in handling between the 6 and the 8, they both are very good for a suv.

and it's funny that I defend the hemi and get bashed by v6 lovers in the performance forum and I am the one called a troll. that's funny stuff right there. Maybe you all should start a "How slow can I go with the best MPG" section on the board and go play in there. Leave the performance section to the people that want performance.

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

It's not the engine problem. Honestly, if V6 had different trans like 8 speed one, it would have been a lot better choice. But too bad.

If you worry about MPG, get V6. But, if you push your V6 hard, you will not be happy with its MPG. Not because of the engine, but because of the 5 speed transmision.

Since Hemi is not offered here in Korea, I had to get V6. Otherwise I would have gotten Hemi. Because I care less about gas price(each full tank costs me about $180) and like V8(my second SUV was '98 Durango with 360(remember that?).

But I'm not saying current Hemi is perfect. It needs to be more refined and,,, 8 speed.

Re: Advice needed.. V6 or V8?

i agree about pushing the V6 statement but the same goes for the hemi...when I pushed it hard for a few days i couldn't do any better then 11/12mpg.

last I looked the OP questioned the V6 or V8, so it's not a (high)performance related question, considering you believe a 15.4 1/4 mile time PERFORMANCE worthy. You must not have driven each long enough because the front-end weight difference is very noticeable at medium speeds through turns. IMO, the v6 seemed close if not just as quick through medium speed turns which makes sense given the passing times posted earlier in this thread.

I have had 3 previous grand cherokees and always elected to go with the V8, but the difference this time was not worth it.

It's been fun, I am going home for the night. talk to you all tomorrow.

I didn't notice a big difference driving the v6 and v8 back to back on the same roads through the turns. I am sure on a track at the limit, the 6 may be better in the turns due to weight. I just don't notice it when driving around.

It may not be a performance based question but it is in the performance section. The difference may not be worth it to you but it is night and day to me. My wife and I drove the v6 first and we were ready to leave the lot because we liked the Explorer better but then decided to drive the 8. We were both sold on the hemi after the first drive. Going back to the other makes with the v6's and even the pentastar were just boring. It may not be an SRT or a race car, but...

No, you get bashed and called a troll because you're trolling.

Plenty of other people posted in this thread preferring the V8 and didn't get bashed or called a troll. Why do you think that is? Its because they stated their opinion without insulting those who disagree with them.

The definition of a troll:

Quote:
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response.
Your statement:

So, by your own admission you're a troll.

It may not be a performance based question but it is in the performance section.
It was originally in the main forum and was moved in here by one of the moderators.
