Exclamation Aftermarket Exhaust WARNING

I cannot believe that I either missed this or it has not been discussed elsewhere before.

I unpacked my new Corsa exhaust this morning and noticed immediately the difference between the OEM and aftermarket exhaust systems. (If Borla and Magnaflow are different, my apologies.) The aftermarket exhaust is NO WHERE NEAR AS ROBUST as the OEM. The OEM mid muffler and the rear resonators are seriously strong, almost built like mini-skid plates themselves. This is good, since they hang below the skid plates. The aftermarket system is nothing more than a "stock" SS system like that on a car.

There is no way the aftermarket front and rear mufflers are going to hold up to any sort or punishment on (or off) the trails. Whether you get high centered or your butt end gets spanked, you will likely do some damage to these exhaust systems. Rock, among other things, is so unforgiving. In any case, every one of my rigs has seen some part of the exhaust system damaged, even parts that I thought were out of harms way. I was surprised when I crawled under the WK2 to look at the skids and exhaust system, to see parts of the exhaust system hanging below the level of the skids. But on further inspection, I was somewhat impressed with how tough the OEM system was built.

That said, I am going to replace the OEM with the Corsa. But, we were never planning to take this rig on any serious trails. Backcountry Jeep trails say like some here in Moab or over in Silverton, sure, but not where I know skid plates are likely to come into play. If we were planning on going on trails where that were the case, I would forgo the aftermarket exhaust and go for durable rather than sound. Which would suck. The manufacturers should have produced a more durable system.

Hope this is helpful to some. Will post about the install and outcome as soon as I am done on the Borla vs Corsa thread.

The OEM "skidplate" is no more than a heat shield that wouldn't hold up against rock anyhow i believe. Other than that the OEM system uses smaller piping and crush bends, the Corsa system is better built in that regard.

I disagree. Try this. Take your fist and hit hard the aftermarket muffler in the middle, it will dent. Now do that to the OEM muffler or resonator. The only thing that will dent is your fist. How well will the OEM hold up against rocks? Depends, but the OEM material stands a way better chance than the aftermarket of holding up. Heat shield? Maybe, but it is built out of steel not your typical aluminum wrapped insulator.

Very true, and certainly gives a way better edge in engine and sound performance but doesn't make it stronger for wheel'n.

My whole point to the post was to at least have others aware that if they are thinking about doing serious wheel'n with their WK2, they should at least weigh this in their decision.

As a side note, I got my Corsa Wednesday, did an inventory on Thursday in hopes of doing the install, but the drivers tunnel muffler had a dent in it despite the foam packing and no visible package damage. Corsa is sending out a replacement but will take 10-14 days. Bummer

Very true, and certainly gives a way better edge in engine and sound performance but doesn't make it stronger for wheel'n.

Heat shields are typically made of aluminum. none the less, bummer to hear about the dented pipe. hope you can enjoy the corsa ASAP!

Thanks for the post. My Corsa should be getting delivered in the morning. I can't wait to hear the 5.7L the way it's supposed to sound. The info on the construction is much appreciated. On a different not, have you or are you planning on installing the exhaust yourself? I got the instructions of the Corsa website. I was just wondering how much of pain it is or is it worth to pay a guys in town the $100 to put it on?

It's about 45-60 min worth of work if they know what they're doing. Typical shop time is like $75/hr. Remember there is no welding or anything difficult related to doing this. With hand tools, might take you 1.5hrs, power/air 45-60min

Well I got the exhaust in this morning and had it installed right after. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I figured it would be a bit louder, but it's very subtle. Even the wife digs it. I think the construction on it isn't bad at all but it does sit a little lower so if you are going to go off roading it may cause and issue or two. The again suspension setting off road II will help
