Aftermarket oil filter and MPG

For the first couple of oil charges I stayed loyal to Mopar and used the OEM oil filter. My local dealer kept horrible hours though so I decided to switch over to WIX filters. After the switch I noticed that my oil pressure was around 5 psi higher and my fuel mileage dropped to around 15 MPG for both city and highway. I have since switched back to the OEM filter and everything has returned to normal. I realize that the WIX filters are probably more restrictive leading to the oil pump being a larger strain on the engine but I find it difficult to believe that an oil filter could cause such a drastic change in fuel economy. Anyone else have similar issues when switching to aftermarket parts?

Re: Aftermarket oil filter and MPG

Weather, temps, route, etc all drastically change MPG. Unless you drive the same route, at the same speed, same wind, same temps daily, it's tough to compare MPG. I have a Napa Gold (Wix) in mine, and noticed no change over stock. However, I notice a change if the temp drops 20-30 degrees from week to week. Or, I notice a change if I drive more stop-n-go, etc.

So are most owners using the Mopar filters or after market filters? If after market, what brand are you using? I will be switching to Mobil 1 oil and was planning to use the Mobil 1 oil filter as well.

I stocked up on Mobil1 filters when I could get them for $6...otherwise I would have gone with Napa Gold or Wix. K&N = Mobil1 for oil filters, so that is another option. Purolator PureOne (yellow filters) are also some good ones, IMHO.

Thanks for the feedback and will keep an eye out for sales on Mobil 1 filters. Costco is currently having a sale on Mobil 1 oil. A case of 6 is under $27 which is $10 off their regular price. I believe the sale is good thru the end of this month.

Good thing our Costco finally started carrying Mobil1 5W-20! I used to only be able to find cases of 5w-30 and 10w-30 at Costco.

Re: Aftermarket oil filter and MPG

I recently just used the Mopar oil filter, but for future use, I did pick up a couple of Purolator PureOne (yellow) oil filters at Pep Boys for $2.99 each. I used them on my 00 WJ 4.7 back when the PureOne filter color was blue.

I was originally searching for this : http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=HP-2010

Then I found the 'lifetime' oil filter and was curious...seems like I'd have to clean it periodically, not sure if others have used the SS-2010
