Re: Borla vs. Corsa

We're back. Finished driving off the engine break-in milage. Finally got to go to speed. Sweet ride.

So Moose, MDS drone aside, how is the sound level during cruise say when the MDS is defeated? I cannot be sure that we are hearing any drone with OEM. Maybe something, not certain.

DCJ, so the Corsa has a low growl that you can hear during cruise at least to the point that it stand out from OEM? No question that it is a HEMI waiting to happen?

So we have both read all the posts re: Cat backs, listened to the video/sound tracks, and are down to either Borla or Corsa. As a baseline, we have a C6 Corvette with the dual mode exhaust with the mild-to-wild mod which lets us switch from a throaty growl to stock (much quieter) sound, at least below 4,000 RPM. Love the sound going through the gears or driving around town. But at cruise between 55-85 I prefer it quieter rather than the constant growling at a steady speed, the wife likes the growl.

As a summary here's what I've gleaned from all the posts:

Borla - Louder of the two while idling, accelerating (both mildly and WOT) and steady cruise, some drone at cruise when MDS kicks in at certain RPM's, has smaller diameter piping, more concealed apperance of rear mufflers.

Corsa - Growl seems to be most noticable primarily only under heavier acceleration while closer to OEM at idle or mild acceleration, has the definate edge in drone elimination, cruise is quieter, picked by Mopar as its performance exhaust (for what its worth), rear mufflers more visibile (hence more at risk off-road?), 3" piping vs 2.5 with Borla.

Both will fit with skid plates per their websites, which is a biggie.

My concerns are that the Corsa will not have the volume at the lower power levels or at idle, and that the Borla will be too loud at cruise. I'm trying to balance what my wife and I each want.

So, would those with either the Borla or Corsa chime in and correct or validate my impressions? Feel free to offer suggestions.

Thanks, Bill
Hey Bill,

Congrats on the new Jeep, welcome to the family. I mainly chose the Corsa due to its OEM fit/finish and MDS noise cancellation. I like loud exhausts, however I hate drone when cruising and that would have killed it for me. I've put on a few thousand miles on the Corsa and I can say I am greatly pleased with it. Cold starts startup with a nice grunt, Light Acceleration is mild, but louder than OE, MDS drone isn't 100% defeated, but its barely there only if you're listening for it in a car without a radio. Mid acceleration is addicting because you know what'll happen when you punch it to over 75% and its a beast at that point. There is such a huge sound range with this exhaust that its pleasing for everyone. It's quiet when you aren't raging, and its raging when you're foot's on the ground.

I think your wife will be pleased that it sounds like a Hemi waiting to be unleashed and it sounds like a Hemi when she punches it. And you'll be pleased that it doesn't drone when cruising down a highway for 300 miles

Check on the orignal Corsa thread, I forgot who it was, but one of the original posters talked about going off roading and the canisters never created a clearance issue. Honestly i don't think the canisters hang lower than the bumper, so any clearance issues are moot. standing behind my Jeep i don't really see the canisters. you gotta be sitting pretty low or be under the car to notice.

Re: Borla vs. Corsa

Thanks to everyone! All the feedback and posts on this and other threads have really helped us. We both have decided that the Corsa would be the best choice for us given the type of driving we do which is 60% road trips. We're hoping that it will be a great compromise between really aggresive and OEM. Had a real itch for the Borla, but didn't want to risk the droning. Just ordered the Corsa from Amazon for $1359 delivered and will be here Friday. A little more the AutoAnything, but no wait either.

I will post later after the install our impressions on our choice.

Bill

So you're the guy who bought the Corsa that was in my Amazon cart... Great deal, please post up with your thoughts after it is installed!

Re: Borla vs. Corsa

I think you are on the right track. But at this point its down to preference. I have a borla kit installed and I love it. I drive with select ERS enabled, so MDS is never active, which solves the drone issue. Before you choose either way, you might try and find some dyno results. I dont have any data to give you, but I know that exhaust velocity pre and post cat is very important with regards to performance. Bigger pipes are not always better. That may not be the case here, but its worth looking into.

frydryce, couldn't agree more on ground clearance... No problems with any steep angles in climb and descent of trails & surfaces that I encountered. Also agree on visual... Canisters are visual from distance or low view point. My personal bias... I like the look, shows it's not oem... Little mark of difference.
BTW... Early thread w corsa & off-road trip was my post.

Bill, you're correct... Sound will be enough to remind you a hemi is under the hood. Sounds nice WOT, but I'd like the extra HP too match the sound too... Several of us are anxious for the tuning-programmer to be released.

Enjoy the Jeep! Compared to many other rigs, the WK2 is great!

Ooops. I hate it when that happens.

We've been Jeepaholics for a long time. We went and looked at the other SUV's and always came away saying "But its no Jeep Grand Cherokee".

Interesting side note from yesterdays buying decision. Corsa suggested I call our dealer and check prices for their Mopar labeled version. The dealer had no special pricing so that was a non stater. But did have the parts department person tell me that on Nov 22nd they had new guidelines from Chrysler regarding aftermarket products and warrenty coverage. Said they wouldn't cover the Corsa (specifically for EPA issues) and other products, even after I mentioned the 1975 Magnuson Moss Warrenty Act. They are sending me a copy to look over. Hope it is a case of mistaken interpretation since I have seen nothing on the forums about this. Will post on a new thread if I read anything significant.

Re: Borla vs. Corsa

IMHO, I think the Borla will be ridiculously loud for a Jeep. On the other hand, I heard that Borla recently came out with a new pipe that has no drone. Corsa offers a variety of pipes. The Corsa sport pipes are probably louder than your Mild to Wild (baffles open).

Re: Borla vs. Corsa

Lucky you, you're already getting your exhaust. I got another email from AutoAnything.com today saying that the earliest ship day for mine is now going to be 5 Dec. I'm about to tell them to stick it and keep it stock. Let us know how it sounds and the install goes.

Is it true you have to remove the rear bumper to get the OEM out?
