CAI / Exhaust - which has the most power

Hey all,
I have been doing a bit of research on CAI as well as exhaust systems. From what I have read so far, it seems that the Volant CAI works the best and has received the best reviews. However, I have not seen any dyno info on this system.

I looked into a few other options, including the K and N system, which in fact, does have a dyno chart - http://www.knfilters.com/dynocharts/63-1563_dyno.pdf . K and N claims an additional 17hp which seems great. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Also, the Volant system looks as if it would receive much colder air vs. the K and N due to the design of the Volant box. With that said, I would think that the Volant would produce more HP due to the colder air. What do you guys think?

As far as the exhaust goes, I drive about 25,000 miles a year, so I don't want a loud system while cruising on the on the highway, but do want more performance, better MPG's and a bit of a growl when I step on it. Again, from the reviews I have read it seems that the Corsa exhaust is the way to go. But I do want to see a dyno chart or get an idea of what types of gains I can expect before I drop over a grand on the system.

If anyone has any ideas of what types of gains are expected or first hand experience I would love to get some feedback.

K&N publishes their # on HP and torque and Volant won't even answer me.

I'd say wait for a tuner to come out.

Any mod you do the Jeep will learn around it as it cannot be tuned for it yet.

K&N numbers are marketing numbers which typically mislead the average Joe. Volant may be choosing to not mislead, or just don't have anything they want to publish.

You need a not yet available tuner to get anything more than a nice sound and perhaps a bit of throttle response out of any exhaust or intake mods. Until gear heads start playing with a tuner and the other mods, which product is the best is only a guess.

The factory CAI for my Pentstar (p/n 77070042) is supposed to be out in a month & will be interesting. The stock plastic intake and air filter is very complex and seems to have a manifold heat furnace just before the IAT sensor and the throttle body. It also has "something" (silencer ?) at front center position just behind the air filter.

On a 80F day, my IAT was reading between 108F and 114F at 45 MPH. I do know that an engine can benefit from a cool dense charge & in Florida really do not need manifold heat so may be able to gain some efficiency from the factory kit, would like to run as close to ambient as possible.

Not sure that is really a furnace, have never seen a "hose" (p/n 68022170AB ) so complex before.

Just an update, the factory CAI is not yet available (apparently can be ordered but no price). However going by the 77070045 for a Challenger, it will probably be north of $400 so going with plan B.

Was running some baseline and acceleration tests last weekend. On an 80F day was seeing IATs over 120F (have seen over 140F on a long idle). In my experience a carb likes intake air around 100F for complete atomization, FI is happy with 90F so INMSHO, the IAT is running too high & the higher the IAT, the further up the PV curve you start (why turbos have intercoolers).

Originally was just going to buy the CAI but my testing has shown a few other things:
1) stock air cleaner is not resricting flow appreciably (monitoring IMAP) even at the 6300 rpm shft point and WOT.
2) air inlet is in front of radiator support (acually runs over it & draws from area just behind the chromed plastic styling piece (grille).
3) From pictures the CAI is drawing from the same location as stock air cleaner, is just creating an "air box" there.
4) I personally do not care for cone air cleaners (& see "1")

So I have just ordered an "air cleaner hose" (big plastic thingie) for dissection and analysis for why it is picking up so much heat from the engine (might be partly the location of the sensor).

Have already figured out how to replace the stock 195F thermostat with a Stant Superstat 180F to keep everything underhood a little cooler but will make one change at a time. Would be interesting if you could get 95% of the effect of a whole CAI kit with just an insulated hose. This is getting to be fun.

Until there is a tuner guess there isn't a way to open up either engine, just the sound will be different. If the computer learns around these mods then it seems a waste of money insofar as gaining more power.
