Exclamation Crimp in stock exhaust (Hemi)

So, I was under the Jeep the other day and noticed that there is a crimp in the passenger side exhaust right after the center muffler (?). It was definitely made in the manufacturing process and I'm wondering what effect this has on both sound and performance. Would chopping that section out and welding in a clean piece of pipe help any?

Thoughts?

Re: Crimp in stock exhaust (Hemi)

It's either there to clear something or to kill a resonance in the system. If it's after the cats and the first muffler then swapping it out will not give you any measurable performance improvement.

Re: Crimp in stock exhaust (Hemi)

I didn't take any pics at the time and the Jeep is 400km away now.

It probably cuts the cross sectional area by 1/3 to 1/2

I put MagnaFlow on and here are a couple pics of the stock exhaust. There are two "crimps" that i noticed and both on the passenger side.

Re: Crimp in stock exhaust (Hemi)

Like I said earlier, those are typically placed in the pipes to kill standing waves and minimize resonance. The reason it's on one side and not the other is for that exact reason, to prevent both sides from resonating at the same frequency.

+1 my stock set looks exactly as JeepLee's photo above.

As MJW described, it is intentional to avoid the sonic resonance of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

That said, the Borla's tend to produce the sonic equivalent of Thor, the God of Thunder. Heh.
