Drone and resonators

So I was wondering where the drone comes from in our vehicles. Does it resonate from the suitcase muffler or does it come from the rear mufflers?

From the feel of it, it comes from the rear in my opinion. So I have been thinking of removing my Gibson resonators and installing some quality mufflers of some sort, not sure which yet. But if its not from the rear then where?

All opinions are welcome.

Re: Drone and resonators

On the stock exhaust system (and most other exhaust systems) the resonators are in place to reduce drone.

I agree but I still have plenty of drone. I am trying to figure out if its coming from the resonators or some place else.

Re: Drone and resonators

I Just went outside and noticed that they are rusting already.. Not even a year on them. And I knocked on them and they are completely hollow... I think that is where the drone is coming from..

Re: Drone and resonators

Did the Gibson axle-back bolt on, or did you have that installed by a shop? If it is bolted on I'd start with double checking all of the fittings and connections to make sure they are TIGHT. Also check all the hangers to make sure they aren't loose anywhere.

My guess is that the Gibson axle-back was tuned using the stock muffler in place. Since you've changed your muffler you might be getting drone at different frequencies than what the resonators were tuned for.

Do you leave MDS on? I know that MDS, especially with custom exhaust systems, can make drone even worse.

I actually just looked at the system on Gibson's website and it says "Gibson Muffler features a baffled & chambered design, no internal packing, powerful deep tone" - I wonder if those are truly mufflers or if they are really resonators. If they are mufflers, then you'd be getting the drone because you basically have the center muffler and then two more mufflers on the rear, which will keep things quiet. Resonators are designed to target specific frequencies and cancel them out, which reduces and/or eliminating the drone.

Re: Drone and resonators

From their discription and from what it looks like first hand, their resonators. And yes I have MDS on and it is SO much worse when it kicks on haha... I'm really thinking about replacing them with actual mufflers.

And I have everything welded up, nothing's clamped.

Re: Drone and resonators

so after a lot of research, im thinking of replacing my center magnaflow 11385 "14inch body" , with a larger bodied magnaflow 12568 "22inch body" , and replace the Gibson rears with Magnafow 14814's ... im hoping to quiet it down and make it more enjoyable on long rides for passangers and my dog.
