Exhaust help

I was looking to put an exhaust on my 13 GC 5.7
I found the Corsa and Borla cat backs and they run $1200-$1500
Then I found the axle backs from Gibson and Borla which are about half the cost of a cat back.
But my question is: The axle back exhaust looks just look like pre bent pipe made to fit your vehicle with a muffler and a tip. And the Borla Atak looks just like pipe and no mufflers, just pipe and tips.
If this is true couldn't I just go to a muffler shop and cut off my mufflers right before the tip and have straight pipe welded in and then a tip? Would this be the same thing? Am I missing something here?

Re: Exhaust help

There have been a few tried and posted threads this over the years. If I recall, it just didn't sound right or provide enough sound and the drone introduced was objectionable. I think there were some sound clips.

Re: Exhaust help

Well, could I find out which resonators and mufflers Borla uses on thier cat-back system and purchase them seperatly. And then swap my current muffler and resos for the Borla ones and be good to go?

Re: Exhaust help

It sounds like your looking for something like what I ended up with. I started out buying the Borla catback and installing it on my WK2. After driving it about a week, I really didn't like the sound it made when I was driving into my neighborhood (around 40 mph). The rest of the time it sounded pretty good (i disabled MDS by using the electronic range select).

After reading some about the Borla axle back systems that were getting good reviews for the WK2 SRT I decided to try turning mine into a axle back set-up by re-installing the suitcase muffler. I did discuss it with Borla prior to re-installing the suitcase muffler because I was curious if they had ever tried it on the 5.7 hemi and of course they had not.

So I took it to my favorite muffler shop there in Austin and had them reinstall the suitcase muffler and then build transition pieces from the suitcase to the Borla rear mufflers. None of the pieces from Borla where cut for this modification, so I could go back to the full Borla set-up if I wanted to.

All in all I think it turned out great. It still has the Borla sound, but just turned down a notch or two.

I would think that Borla would be willing to sell you the left and right rear muffler assemblies that they include in the catback. If so, a good muffler shop should be able to build a couple transition pipes for you at a reasonable price.

Just wanted to give you a little feedback from someone that has done exactly what you are asking about.

Re: Exhaust help

Very cool. I appreciate all the info.
Yeah no dice on purchasing those mufflers from Borla. Borla said that they don't sell those mufflers individually. So I will probably just purchase two non vehicle specific Borla mufflers and have them welded on.
I was still thinking about electric exhaust cutouts too.
