Re: First Oil Change

Are you guys using a filter end cap wrench or filter pliers to remove the oil filter?

I used filter pliers I got cheap from harbour freight. Almost no effort is necessary as they should be hand tightened. If your on your factory fill which you will be, it might require some extra effort.

I used a filter end cap wrench. And boy was the original filter on tight. I'm surprised the threads on the oil filter boss weren't stripped. But I can almost understand why because I had to keep tightening the oil filter since it kept seeping until I got it tight enough. I used a Mopar filter this time. Next time I'll be using a Purolator PureOne filter. Hopefully that one will not have to be tightened on as much as the Mopar.

I put on a K&N (same as mobil 1 w/addition of hex on end). I only had to hand tighten about 1/2-1 turn once gasket made contact with the block. No leaking.. You put a thin layer of oil on the gasket too right?

Same thing here - the factory filter was WAY overtight, not just tough to break loose initially, but required a lot of grunt to unscrew the first turn or so. Also, the gasket remained stuck to the engine. My band-type wrench would not do it, the metal shield (drip spout?) interfered, so I had to get an end cap style wrench to do the job.

The new (Wix) filter sealed up good, at 3/4 turn on an oiled gasket.

The 5.7L HEMI uses 93mm filters. This is the end cap wrench I picked up from Napa for around $5.
