Re: First Oil Filter Change 5.7 Hemi

It definitely had to be a double seal type issue. That was definitively confirmed when the Service Manager came over to where I was sitting to offer an apology and state "it was a defective oil filter". What a demeaning twit!

Glad to hear you found the problem. Appears this double seal issue is fairly common for the first filter change on the Hemi.

Thumbs up to all who have posted about this problem.

Re: First Oil Filter Change 5.7 Hemi

& I offer up my special thanks to all posters for helping me to become aware of the double seal issue and to correct the improper first oil change attempted by my local Jeep dealership.

Re: First Oil Filter Change 5.7 Hemi

This is very good info. I stopped changing my own oil a few years ago, I think it's time to reevaluate that thought.

Re: First Oil Filter Change 5.7 Hemi

I have to re-change my oil on my WK2 hemi. Took my oil & filter back to the dealer for a service.
I ordered 8 qts of oil. One extra for a spare. So I just took the oil & filter in the box and took it to the dealer. Dealer says that any unused oil(should be 1 qt) he would leave in the back of the JeeP GC. Get home no qt of oil. Phoned dealer -----mechanic says he put it all in --- says it needed it based on the dipstick. Check stick in driveway. Sure enough -- 1/2'' over the hash marks on the dip stick. Now tomorrow morning I goto drain the oil and put it all back except for the qt.
P me off.

Should be closer to the lower mark on the dip stick.

Re: First Oil Filter Change 5.7 Hemi

I changed mine this weekend. I have the 5.7 and tow package which I believe increases the oil capacity due to the oil cooler. Mine took close to 8 quarts to reach the full mark.

Re: First Oil Filter Change 5.7 Hemi

I always lube the new filter seal with a dab of oil on my fingers. Ensures it comes off next time without seal sticking.

Great tip, I always try and put oil in the filter before I screw it on as well.

Re: First Oil Filter Change 5.7 Hemi

I changed mine early (1100 miles) since we were going on a weekend trip to the Smokies and the filter seal stuck to the engine, peeled it right off no problem.
