Re: GC '98 with 5.2 V8 vs '11 with V6

Thanks for your suggestions. I drove both V6 and Hemi and decided on V6 - should receive it within a week. On highway I just didn't feel a difference between V6 and Hemi. I don't tow or offroad.

You will be more then happy with the V6 IMHO.

I've put about 3800 miles on my V6 4x4, including a 2000 mile road trip. I have yet to wish I had more power. The only times I've needed to even consider flogging the V6 are when moving at a slow speed (residential streets) going uphill- if you want to accelerate you'll need to force a kickdown. Still, not a deal breaker. Around town and on the highway I'm very pleased with the V6.

Like you, I drove both before making a decision. IMO, the V8 doesn't have enough extra grunt to make the increased fuel consumption worthwhile (let alone the extra couple thousand up front). If those two things don't trouble a prospective buyer, then that buyer maybe should consider the V8; after all, more power won't hurt. But it won't provide a completely different driving experience.

I'm a very satisfied Pentastar-powered WK2 owner.

I'm glad you're happy. At high altitude, the loss of power made the V6 stuggle too much for my liking. I thought there was a big difference in driving experience between the two, but I'm also used to driving a fast car, and the transition to an SUV will be hard enough....

At high altitudes I expect things would change. I did drive through the Appalachians and didn't feel underpowered, but they aren't the Rockies. If I were climbing hills at a mile of altitude, I might want more. The only times I might like more torque are when going through a hilly residential area; at 25-30mph, the transmission selects a gear that doesn't make for easy acceleration on uphill grades- it needs to kick down a gear or two. But I don't barnstorm in neighborhoods, so that isn't a problem.

Re: GC '98 with 5.2 V8 vs '11 with V6

Good for you, i am glad to hear that it is not as bad as we all thought it would be.

Until i got my 05 4.7V8 WK i had never owned anything but a Cherokee XJ with the 4.0 HO I6. I miss that engine, it might not have had high HP but to me it was a work horse and could always perform the way i needed it to when i needed it. The torque of the engine well made up for the lack of HP (190hp) To this day i miss a 4.0 and i want a 4.0 WJ for myself and id give my wk to my wife. I would easily take a 190hp 4.0HO in a WK (if it were possible) over my 235hp 4.7 V8. I wish they 4.0 was still in production.

Another note, when my wife and i got married last spring we had a 2010 Dodge Challenger for a rental for our honeymoon. It was a 3.5l V6. I was really bummed that they did not rent any Hemi models or SRT8s. But to my liking that 3.5 (300 hp) V6 really moved that big heavy Challenger around quite nicely. I bet it would sound good with and exhaust too! Just because something is a V6 but offered with a V8 does not mean its sluggish or wont perform, it just depends on what you are used to. I could easily get in to trouble on a reg basis with a 3.5 Challenger or Charger. (it easily felt more powerful and responsive then my 235hp 4.7 V8) 6 Cylinders are really starting to produce some great numbers for american auto manufacturers finally.

One day i might buy a WK2 used and id be willing to give a v6 a chance if the price is right.

It's interesting to compare modern V6 engines to some of the 8 cylinder engines of the past couple decades. The V6 gets more power with far less fuel consumption than some eights that were quite competent for their day. Right now we're seeing new six cylinder engines getting right at around 280-300HP, and that's amazing. In the few applications where a V8 is still used, they're generating somewhere in the 400HP range (the 5.7L Hemi is a bit behind in this).

It wasn't that long ago that 400+ HP was the domain of super high performance exotics. Now that much is available for a very reasonable price. Regular family vehicles are now coming with engines producing nearly 300HP.

Re: GC '98 with 5.2 V8 vs '11 with V6

I too have a v6 overland..have about 1,000 miles. Im happy w the pentastar as well. I agree w techno, the power is def more than adequate for the majority of driving situations. The gas mileage has been improving steadily as the engine is breaking in. I do not tow and after testing the hemi, didnt make me really want it regardless of the extra money (though it is nice to save the upfront money and savings on gas). Asthetically speaking, I like the dual exaust..but that can be done fairly cheap on the v6...

Re: GC '98 with 5.2 V8 vs '11 with V6

I look at it like this, The 4.7 V8 that i have is 235 HP. There are tons of people who have this engine and think it is more then enough for the WK (though many dont and think the HEMI is the only way to go) So if you were happy with a 4.7 V8 with 235 HP or the near 300HP gen 2 4.7 and 4.7HO then getting in to a near 300HP V6 should not feel any different. Just leave your ego at home and forget you only have 6 cylinders and it should feel just the same.

^^I was completely incapable of doing any of this.

That said, the V6 was impressive. Recently in a rental Mustang that had plenty of cajones, we had to pop open the hood because I didn't believe it was a V6 (305hp).

Has nothing to do with egos, but there are a few of us that want more horsepower as well as torque for towing through the mountains.

Yea, this is true, i just know alot of people would rather say they have a v8 vs a v6 even if the 6 had 300hp.
