500 mile update:
Sound has gotten better and deeper now that it's broken in more. I can now tell the difference between the Volant intake and Gibson (both by the way are the perfect match). Idle has a nice deep rumble, like I mentioned before its like stock but amplified. Cruising around town it's nice and deep sounding....totally how the Hemi should sound. I'm still trying to borrow my buddies GoPro so I can get some video.

Now the annoying part. The faint hum/droning sound at approximately 65 mph in MDS is only noticeable with the radio off. Some claim no drone, I say there's minimal. While that sound is annoying, drone or not, it's manageable and only a slight annoyance to deal with for the great sound it produces the other 95% of the time.

Take my review as you will, just MY review. It's a great sounding kit and totally worth the money.

Any updates on the vid? I'm currently deciding on either going with the Volant or the Gibson exhaust and am having a hard time deciding between the two. Going to get some quotes on install this weekend.

From the first time I rode in a Wk2 back in 2010 I found the silent cabin to be one of its crowning features and have continued to enjoy this silence through the last 30,000 miles. While sitting at work last month though, digging through Amazon’s auto section, I stumbled upon a new Gibson Axle back system on sale for $395 with free shipping. Although this initial thread led me to believe this system was guaranteed to provide drone at highway speeds I took the gamble and clicked the rapid check-out button and never looked back. With free shipping and a no hassle return policy I figured why not.

After my first attempt at installing the system on a slanted driveway on ramps I experienced a horrible rattle and substantial drone during my first test drive. The drone was only noticeable during highway cruising between roughly the 1800-2300 rpm range. As I drove home cursing my irrational purchase I decided my two available options were to swallow my pride and head to an exhaust shop to let the pros take over or consult the hotrod guru across the street. After a quick phone call to Gibson’s tech support they informed me that “drone was very uncommon” with the system and that installation was most likely the issue. Following consultation from the neighborhood car guru we determined that I had cut the passenger pipe too short, which was causing a poor connection between the new/old pipes and leaking. (The installation guide complete poppycock FYI.) After a quick trip to O’reilley’s for sealing clamps, which are shown in pics, and resetting both mufflers on their hangers the drone had faded to an unnoticeable level and the rattle was gone. The system is now STELLAR.

Gibson Hardware: Dual mufflers, 2 U-Clamps, Gibson stickers, and installation guide. Gibson sections connect to stock system by sliding over the oem pipes (2.25>2.0 sizing.) Also, please note that the box was beat to hell when it was delivered the week following my order.

http://www.amazon.com/Gibson-Performance-Exhaust-617407-Stainless/dp/B009T6YYSK/ref=au_pf_ss_9?ie=UTF8&Make=Jeep%7C42&Model=Grand% 20Cherokee%7C349&Year=2011%7C2011&carId=001&n=1568 4181&s=automotive

Tone: As others have mentioned the exhaust note is only noticeable at idle and under heavy load. At highway speeds when MDS is active there is a discrete tone change as the engine switches between 4-8 cylinders. This change is completely hidden when we have the radio on. Idle is deeper and throatier now, similar to the stock Ram or Denali systems. Now it sounds like a proper 360hp V8.

Summary: Great price & great tone. Nice for extended highway use and clean/deep tone at low speeds and takeoff. I would buy again and will be leaving the system on for the remainder of my ownership.

I do not have proper equipment to get decent video footage uploaded at this time so please enjoy these shatty iPhone shots and let me know if you have questions.

-HM.

Re: Gibson Exhaust ORDERED

Yeah, the UPS guy was very quick to point out that he wasn't responsible for the damage when he dropped the box off. Nothing was damaged though so I guess I can’t complain.

Re: Gibson Exhaust ORDERED

I guess I was hoping for a little more sound from the Gibson exhaust. But at the same time hoping for no drone and quiet at highway speeds. It appears the Gibson is the best choice for me.

Re: Gibson Exhaust ORDERED

Check out my before and after Gibson installation. It is a subtle difference but I like it.
