Re: Got demolished by a Ford Explorer Sport

Me neither bud. I've driven a couple of rental Altima's, and CVT sucks indeed. Never drove an Infiniti though so can't comment on their 7 speed. Not planning on getting a JX either, once my lease is up I'll either get a new CRD or jump to a Touareg diesel which will probably be cheaper.

Not really a fan of front wheel drive/all wheel drive cars.

I didn't expect the older 11'-13's to be that bad, i would not be happy lol.

The 14' 5.7 with the 8 speed is not slow for a 5000lb suv. Especially at highway speeds, it pulls pretty hard and has plenty of power. Compared to a couple of my previous v6 SUV's the jeep is faster. I put it to the test on a trip from Boston to NYC real late at night

Biggest difference under acceration on the new 8 speed is the shift times. I don't remember the actual milliseconds but it is fast. Think about a slower shifting manual trans driver vs. a faster one. Both could accelerate the same but you loose momentum and power when the transmission isn't pushing that torque back out to the wheels in that time.

Also as noted in the options thread, the ability to kick down and pass because the new tranny has some very wild direct gear selection capabilities.

Yup, the 8 speed was a huge selling point for me when i first heard about it. When i first drove the jeep with the 8 speed it felt similar to my sisters previous VW Jetta with the DSG transmission. The jeep shifts in 200 milliseconds which is pretty quick. The worst transmission i have driven lately was in a 2012 chevy impala, that thing would just hold onto the gears and not want to shift! It was painfully slow shifting into gears when you got on it. It was hard to believe it had 300hp!

Back the statement up with some numbers. Post some links to magazine tests with some 1/4 mile numbers. Unless the 2014 is running in the 14's it is still a joke by todays standards .

This is the only place i can find that has 0-60 times and 1/4 times. Don't know how legit they are. I want to see motor trend or car and driver do a test. I would do one myself if i had a way to accurately measure it:

0-60 = 6.8
1/4 = 14.3

Jeep Grand Cherokee 0-60 1/4 mile fuel economy

I wouldn't trust those numbers at all. When car and driver tested the hemi with the 5spd, yes it is not 6, it ran a 0-60 of 7.5 and a 1/4 mile of 15.8 @ 91 mph. I suspect the 8 spd might knock over 1/2 second off of that. So on a good day, maybe high 6's to 60 and maybe break into 14's for the 1/4. The old tranny was a dog. The 30-50 passing time with the hemi was actually slower than what they got on a V6 Laredo. The new V6 8spd combo will probably run pretty close with the previous hemi. Based on the passing times, it will probably beat it from a roll. It was only 3 mph slower through the 1/4 than the hemi both on the old transmission.

I sort of agree with your assessment. However from being in and out of these I think the Transmission is making a little bit better improvement than you are guessing. I would like to see some proper tests but your evaluation is making the assumption of simply a better Transmission. It does shift extremely fast which will change the acceleration but it is also way more efficient and has 3 entire more ratios getting more power to the wheels at higher engine output power.

All Theory of course until we see some credible testing.

I'm curious for some testing as well. I'm surprised no magazine has tested the new 8spd jeeps yet. Its a pretty significant upgrade. The only cla I saw was Cnet said 7.5 to 60 for the V6, but they didn't give any proof of it. If so, the Hemi is probably a full second quicker. The gear ratios are a huge improvement over the old trans. The Hemi went into a 1:1 ratio by third gear. First gear was around a 3.00:1. The new 8 is 4.7:1. When I tested the new Hemi, it was quicker than the '13 I initially tested. That is why I was fine with the new V6 combo. It was that much better than the old. The Hemi easily chirped the tires everytime I pulled away from a stop with moderate throttle input.

I should also say that yes the 8 speed has brought all new life to the 3.6 as well. Slightly different Transmission but has seriously improved the appeal and capability of the V6.

That is why I opted for the V6. I was originally set on a Hemi overland when I looked at the '13. When the '14 came out I test drove again and ended up with a V6 limited. Just added the 20" wheels, 8.4 Nav and sunroof. I wanted white and didn't like that the Overland has the lip around the wheels painted on the '14. I like the way the black breaks it up. It looks good on darker colors, but not in white. There are definitely times when the kid in me wants a Hemi, but the V6 does very well. I don't think it is that much slower than my BMW 328i. I believe that is good for a high 14 in the 1/4. Definitely surprised how much the 8spd helped. When you look at the other brands across the board with the ZF8, they all picked up some significant performance. The Audi A8 went from a 14 second car to a low 13. It did get a little HP boost as well, but not that much.

Re: Got demolished by a Ford Explorer Sport

I can see the the 14' 5.7 doing 0-60 around 6.5-6.8 and the 1/4 mile in the 14's. Mine definitely felt faster after it passed the first 2000 miles and was broken in. The transmission reset also helped with the shifts under hard acceleration it shifts smoother then before. The 8 speed has made a big difference for both the 3.6 and 5.7.
