Re: How much oil between add and full?

I just had my oil changed at the dealership since it went in for water in the battery box... again.. I'll have to see where it ended up on the dipstick this time it was done about 2 days ago..

When mine took almost 8 quarts to reach the top mark, what I had done was a little strange. I drained all the oil until it completely stopped dripping, and then removed the filter and put a new one on. Because I didn't have an oil filter wrench that fit I put the drain plug back in and took a different car to go get a wrench (I prefer to have my filter a little tighter than just hand tightened even if it's a little tougher to remove). When I came back with the filter wrench I removed the drain plug again just for kicks, and I couldn't believe how much more oil came out. It felt like the first time around the oil cooler and lines hadn't drained, but for some reason letting it sit for that long caused almost another quart to drain. I know it sounds weird, but it really had stopped dripping the first time, but much more came out after letting it sit for another half hour, probably about enough to explain the one quart difference.

Re: How much oil between add and full?

The oil level on the dipstick is accurate when the engine oil is hot, at full operating temperature. It also takes longer for the oil to get up to temp than the coolant, so drive for a good while, and then check it. Volume exapansion occurs at operating temperatures, so the reading will be higher than if the oil is not fully hot.
