Yeah..we played with timing ..gap and octane

Unfortunately none of the changes seemed to help ..still not totally sure why we never got it right ..just hoping the next motor will be better

I'm surprised more octane didn't help. Did you try race gas like 104 octane? And I'm not talking about octane booster.

Thanks
Michael Plummer

Unfortunately no..I never got a chance to try race gas

I only tried 93with lots of octane booster ..I'm hoping this next motor will not require anything above 93 as well

Welp, I was going to say you should try switching over to conventional oil to get less blow-by. That was a recommendation back in the day from a shop that specialized in putting Vortechs on Mustangs. If you had oil coming out of your exhaust, I can't imagine that being very good for your tune or the general combustion of the engine. Possibly why you couldn't get a good tune together. Also, if enough oil got in there, it could have just hydrolocked.

But damn dude, going from 9 to 13 pounds of boost is kind of a crazy jump on an engine that's already at the limit. You could have saved yourself some dough on the rebuild by using the stock block and other parts instead of windowing the block and spreading shrapnel through the system.

Well...I've been known to make some very bad decisions when it comes to cars and engines ..but I had already approved the build of a custom engine using a new core before this one blew..so it really didn't matter to me..just a bummer that I couldn't make it last long enough til the new motor was ready

Wow, that was catastrophic! Fun at least? Best luck with the build. Keep us posted!

Re: How much power you think the 3.6L pentatstar is capable of?

***UPDATE****

FINALLY....after 7 months of building and spending money on this damn custom 3.6L engine...my jeep is back up and running

I am not driving it though until it's tuned...my jeep is being dropped off at the Dyno shop tomorrow and is supposed to be tuned on Saturday

so after all this time and money...we will get to see what the REAL horsepower numbers look like...if it's less than 450Hp to the wheels I am really going to be bummed...I could have bought an SRT for the cost of this motor upgrade alone

Here's what I went with for the new Custom engine setup:

Forged Pistons (1/2 ratio drop in compression)
Custom ground cams
fully ported heads
stainless steel valves
ARP studs throughout
fully balanced/blueprinted
Custom fuel rails
Custom fuel system with pump booster/srt in tank pump/full 1/2" fuel line with Aeromotive regulator for return
New HD Rods

RIPP Stage 2 Blower system with Intercooler is going to be supplying the boost

Everything on this motor was built with new parts or custom parts

This was built with the intention of putting 14-15LBS of Boost to it and being able to sustain it

I also had a new Torque Converter built that is supposed to be a big improvement over stock @2800+ rpms ...so we'll have to see how that works out

all in all its driving really nice on the tune I have in it ...but I'm waiting for the new tune before I really open her up

Re: How much power you think the 3.6L pentatstar is capable of?

I cannot wait to see this!!! Id like to see a balls out e85 tune, I think with your setup (depending on compression of those pistons) 15psi, you will easily attain your goal, and 470s should be realistic on a race only tune.

info on TC, asap please!

Re: How much power you think the 3.6L pentatstar is capable of?

Would appreciate it if you could answer the following questions below.

Forged Pistons (1/2 ratio drop in compression): What is the actually compression ratio?

Custom ground cams: This should help a lot.

fully ported heads: Fully ported stk. heads? Any flow data?

putting 14-15LBS of Boost to it and being able to sustain it: Who built the engine?

new Torque Converter built that is supposed to be a big improvement over stock @2800+ rpms ...so we'll have to see how that works out: Stk. or aftermarket?

but I'm waiting for the new tune: Who's tuning it?

Thank you
Michael Plummer

Re: How much power you think the 3.6L pentatstar is capable of?

Would appreciate it if you could answer the following questions below.

Forged Pistons (1/2 ratio drop in compression): What is the actually compression ratio?

I believe Stock is 10.2:1 and these (Race Tech) pistons with the 12cc dish provide 9.7:1
1/2 ratio drop due to the 12cc relief I'm told lowered it .5:1 over stock ..see pics

Custom ground cams: This should help a lot.

fully ported heads: Fully ported stk. heads? Any flow data?

Stock heads ..flow data shows a 20% increase over stock

putting 14-15LBS of Boost to it and being able to sustain it: Who built the engine?

The engine was built by 505 performance out of New Mexico ..they specialize in Jeep engines and are pros with forced induction on these motors

new Torque Converter built that is supposed to be a big improvement over stock @2800+ rpms ...so we'll have to see how that works out: Stk. or aftermarket?

There is no aftermarket option so I bought a new stock one and they cut it open and modified the clutch packs etc...This was done by someone else that 505 knows?

but I'm waiting for the new tune: Who's tuning it?

It's being Tuned at modified mechanics in sagamore, ma. They have a mustang 4wd dyno..the tuning is going to be done by Mike brockway ..utilizing hp tuning

Re: How much power you think the 3.6L pentatstar is capable of?

here's a couple pics of the old motor.....the 1st pics is the lower oil pan JUST as it dropped off the engine...it was FULL of metal parts..this thing exploded like you wouldn't believe...sent shrapnel through the entire engine...so nothing was reusable really...even the upper intake had metal in it

there were 3 or 4 Good sized holes through the block as well...
COMPLETELY shredded 2 pistons/rods ...ate the oil pickup and cracked most of the passenger side block

Thanks for the replies, it's appreciated. Good luck at the dyno and I hope it makes the HP you're looking for.

See ya
