Re: Impressed with V6 MPG

Why would the wheel size make a difference if the tire outer diameters are the same?

Re: Impressed with V6 MPG

It makes a difference because of two things:

1. Unspring weight
2. Rolling resistance

Larger wheels are usually heavier than smaller wheels, and the difference in unsprung weight hurts fuel economy. Lower profile tires usually have less rolling resistance too, which hurts fuel economy. The difference is probably small with the 18s vs the 20s.

Re: Impressed with V6 MPG

17's, 18's, & 20s are all about the same diameter, do 20's get the same 18" full size spare also ?

ps inflation pressure has more to do with rolling resistance than profile.

Those are impressive numbers for the V6 GC.

Re: Impressed with V6 MPG

Took my 1st longer trip from Mpls to Indy this past week in my 2012 GC with 3.6L V6.

The oil change notice came on at exactly 3500.0 miles (just as the dealer had told me it would), so I changed the oil to synthetic right before leaving on a round-tip from Minneapolis to Indianapolis and back this past week. I put on approximately 1300 miles. For the drive down, we had a few hundred lbs of stuff - in addition to our luggage - that we dropped off in Indy.

The first day, we drove from Minneapolis to Chicagoland into a headwind with the cruise set at 71 mph and averaged 23.5 mpg. The next morning we filled up and drove through the wonderfull Chicago "55 mph" freeway system, crusing at 60-65 mph most of the way in pretty much bumper to bumper traffic. Once we were on Hwy 65 heading south to Indy, we were able to get back to setting the cruise at 70-71 mph. Not much wind and across the flatlands to Indy, averaged 27.3 mpg.

We staying in the Indy area for the week, and went through a 1/2 tank of gas mostly 50/50 city/hwy and averaged 22.1 mpg.

For the return trip, we went the entire way on less than 1 tank. It is really impressive to see the EVIC indicating 602 miles for a full tank. We drove through thunderstorms for the first 100 miles, then bucked a sidewind from Madison to Minneapolis. We averaged 25.3 mpg from Indy to Mpls. I admit I was a little heavier on the throttle, keeping in the low 70's with bursts to mid-high 70's mph.

Overall, a great trip and very impressed with both the mpg and how well the GC handles on a trip. Smooth and quiet, with unlimited music support from the media system HDD, with some Sirius radio thrown in.

Re: Impressed with V6 MPG

I was concerned about the mpg going in, but the GC gets within 1-2 mpg of the FWD Ford "SUV" that I traded and is much more fun to drive. My experience with renting many 2011-12 GC's over the past few years is that most will get 24 mpg+ if driven with a lighter foot and keep it in the 65-72 mph zone.

I am assuming my engine is now totally "broken-in", and that the full synthetic oil helped with the mpg as well.

Also, I should have mentioned that Minnesota requires 10% minimum ethanol content. From experience, I find that costs 1-1.5 mpg and may have been a factor in the 1st leg only getting 23.5 mpg combined with the strong headwind most of the way. Once I refueled in southern Wisconsin (no ethanol and before passing into the 20 cents/gallon higher Illinois gas) the mpg went up immediately.

I refueled this morning and drove approximately 20 miles to work - all freeway - and I could see I am back into the 23-24 mpg range thanks to the Minnesota ethanol-"enhanced" gasoline blend. This is going up to 20% minimum ethanol by law effective August 30, 2013, so mpg will drop even further:

Ethanol Blend Mandate
All gasoline sold or offered for sale in Minnesota must contain at least 10% ethanol (E10), or the maximum percent of denatured ethanol the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows in all vehicles regardless of model year. Gasoline-ethanol blends must comply with ASTM specification D4814-08b. Effective August 30, 2013, all gasoline sold or offered for sale in the state must contain at least 20% ethanol (E20), unless, by December 31, 2012, ethanol has already replaced 20% of all motor vehicle fuel sold in the state, or EPA has not granted approval for the use of E20 in all vehicles regardless of model year. Certain exemptions apply. (Reference Minnesota Statutes 239.761 and 239.791)
