Re: Is it Possible to Completely Turn off "Remote Start"?

I just got my Grand Cherokee a few weeks ago and got the remote start option because it was already on the closest model I wanted. Since my vehicle is mostly garaged in a mild climate, I really have no use for the option. Last weekend as I was up on a ladder cleaning a ceiling fan, I must have inadvertently pressed the magic button twice against the ladder (in my pocket) per the manual. Lo and behold, awhile later I found my beloved GC running in my closed garage. I was furious!!! I opened the key fob as if to change the battery and removed the tiny black disk under the remote start function. Since I left the other fob as is, I now can enjoy it either way. This is a perilous option (imho).

Perilous? It does cut off after 15 minutes...

An unattended vehicle running is a waste of fuel at a minimum ... Have there been vehicles that have slipped out of "Park" in the past?? This is an accident waiting to happen.

If you park your vehicle properly, in park with the parking brake engaged...thats incredibly unlikely to happen.

You can get hit by a truck getting your newspaper in the morning too. Is getting your paper "an accident waiting to happen"? I have a friend who'se neighbor's house went up in flames a few months ago. The cause? A Mini Cooper in the garage caught on fire while shut off (there was a recall). Is parking in a garage an accident waiting to happen? Trees fall on people, is having a trees in your yard an accident waiting to happen?

Drama queen much? If you accidentally remote start your Jeep (something that is unlikely enough as it is, to hit the button twice just right in your pocket), and in the 15 minutes its running it somehow slips out of park AND the parking brake fails, AND it creeps through your wall at the 2 or 3 MPH it creeps at and kills you...I'm sorry but you were meant to die.

Re: Is it Possible to Completely Turn off "Remote Start"?

I use the parking brake whenever I park, I've been doing it so long its just automatic. Vehicles are actually not meant to be left just in the park setting on the transmission, the parking prawl in many cases will release if the vehicle is hit when parked, etc. You absolutely do hear cases of that happening. I had a buddy of mine once who came out from a 7-11 and found his car in the street, a witness said he saw someone back into it and it rolled down, off the curb, into the street.

On top of that, using it takes the vehicles weight load off of the transmission, which is always a good thing.

Using your parking brake whenever you park is good practice.

Wow, just wow.

I suspect that you (and several others in this thread) would be better served by selling that vehicle and buying another, more simplified one. In fact, maybe Mass Transit would be your best solution.

Modern vehicles are usually designed to be as idiot proof as possible. But what happens then... someone goes and comes out with a better idiot.

+1 to everything you said.

I also always use my parking brake. And I have no problem with the current remote start system.

I use my parking brake whenever I park on something other than a flat surface. My garage for example is perfectly level, so I don't bother with it. But at work, I use the parking brake.

I wouldn't mind if Jeep had included an electronic parking brake that was automated. Would probably help long term reliability of the transmission too. Plus they're neat, and I'm frankly not that fond of pedal based parking brakes.

Its just totally automatic for me, I don't even realize I do it anymore.

But, honestly the parking brake is meant to be used EVERY time you park, every owners manual of every car I've ever owned has said so. Where I really got that was when I took a performance driving course one time and the instructor spent 30 minutes on the parking brake, what it was, and why it needed to be used. Afterwards we were all about to kill him because we wanted to go burn some rubber...but he converted me at least.

Re: Is it Possible to Completely Turn off "Remote Start"?

If I used the parking brake everytime.. My wife would hop in and panic not knowing why the jeep is not moving hahah .. Or wonder what the burning smell is going down the road.. On hills yes, on flat I don't..

in my standard shift 6spd i do use it all the time...mainly because i parked at sheetz once and as i was getting back in it popped outta gear and started to roll back...i was lucky to be in it at the time..
