Question ISO WK2 Hemi oil change walkthrough

I've always been very good about regular oil changes per the manufacturer's recommended interval. Given some of the stories I've read here (Dunecrawler's dealer issue, WK2OverlandII's sticky gasket thread, $$ savings) I'm thinking of trying my hand at changing my own oil in my Overland. I have not seen a pic- and detail-intensive walkthrough of this here on JG despite searching. Am I missing it or would anyone be willing to do that as a public service?

Maybe it's so easy that I'll catch hell for even asking. But any accumulated wisdom/recommendations/best practices would be appreciated including shop gear to have on hand...drive-on lifts, filter end cap wrench, other tools, access techniques, rookie mistakes, that sort of thing. Anyone game?

PS: The previous comments about the hassles of used oil disposal and other opportunity costs of the DIY route are duly noted... TIA.

Thanks RoF. I should've known to check that site for this sort of info.

This is also my excuse to get a cool floor jack and set of jack stands for the garage. Where's that Costco membership card??

I don't jack mine up. I raise the Quadra-lift to Off-Road II and then push both up and down buttons at the same time to disable the system. There’s plenty of ground clearance to crawl underneath.

Re: ISO WK2 Hemi oil change walkthrough

I don't have QL, and just laid in the driveway. I could easily get at the filter and drain. Definitely look at the filter when you take it off and make sure the old filter has the rubber gasket on it. I've been changing my oil for over 25 years and never had the gasket come off. Luckily I saw someone post the reminder and checked, sure enough mine was stuck to block.
***Also remember to partially fill the new filter with new oil. Fill about 3/4 full, wait a minute or so (oil will get absorbed into filter) then add a little more. This will help to prevent dry starts. The oil in the pan goes to the filter first then dispersed to the motor***

Yeah........that was my post.

Also good idea about pre-filling the filter with oil I'll make sure I do that from now on...Thanks for the tip.

Re: ISO WK2 Hemi oil change walkthrough

I wouldn't use a jack to get it up. I'd probably get a set of ramps.

ramps are no good on this model (5.7) unless you place them on the rear wheels and drive backward on them, then clearance where you needed sucks (front). reason i say it is because of the drain plug location (front facing), if you lift the front not all your oil will drain...

there's plenty space to get underneath level parked...

Re: ISO WK2 Hemi oil change walkthrough

been awhile, still sucks changing the oil as in messy on my arm, not messy on the car ;p

one thing that's a little strange, can't use extractor from the top through the oil dipstick tube, it doesn't go all the way down, seems like it catches somewhere about 2 inches just too short.
you notice the little catch even when you insert your dipstick slowly, you feel it as it goes past it right before the end...
it'd make it a little easier to extract from top first, to avoid any spashing when draining at the bottom.
(this is on the 5.7).

anyway, should have could have wished for the filter to be on top as well but oh well gotta get messy once in a while ;p
