Re: Jeep dropping diesel w/ no plans to bring it back

I test drove the Touareg recently with the diesel. Could not believe I was driving a diesel. Quiet engine, amazing transmission, great gas mileage. But the Touareg is not towable 4-down behind our motorhome, so it was off the list. On top of that, they have dropped the air suspension in 2011, and the 4 wheel drive system with the better differentials, which I would need for Moab. But, I do wish I could have ordered the Overland with that diesel/transmission combo of the VW. Wow.

Finally someone who agrees with me
That deisel/gearbox combo in the Toureg really is a nice driveline.
As you say, shame they've dumbed the 4WD system down with the latest generation. No shame in losing the air suspended version though, the steel version was far superior in ride, although it couldn't self-level.

Re: Jeep dropping diesel w/ no plans to bring it back

I drove the Touareg TDI as well and loved it...nice torque and who can argue with those MPG numbers...almost got into a leftover 2009 this past spring but just couldn't do it. Really really want the WK2.

Re: Jeep dropping diesel w/ no plans to bring it back

My whole issues with dropping the diesel is the fact that they only offered the Diesel in the US in the most expensive models. I talked to a few people who said it was being dropped because of lack of sales. WELL DUH!! 99% of people that want the diesel would prolly buy a Laredo before an Overland or Limited. Sure stick it in the $40k plus models only and see how many people can afford to buy it. Put it in the Laredo and i guarantee sales would jump up for the diesel because people can actually aford it. Its bad enough th diesel upgrade is expensive in itself but the model it comes in here in the US does not need to be the top line model.

Most people with a top end overland or WK bought brand new prolly dont want a diesel any way.

Yeah that sales strategy is the opposite of here in Australia....

At a rough guess I would give Aussie sales at 80% Laredo Diesel, with an even mix of V6 and V8's for the rest.

Garage
It was mentioned by the engineers that diesel was dropped because of the stringent requirements in the usa.

Re: Jeep dropping diesel w/ no plans to bring it back

That may be but it still made no sense to only offer the CRD in the Overland and possibly some Limited models in the US. They should have offered it in the Laredo and i bet there would have been a significent sales rise.

Great link, thanks!

Other item of interest was turbocharging the V6 for an Alfa variant.

rdeiriar is on a distinguished road
Re: Jeep dropping diesel w/ no plans to bring it back

I think there is a good reason, weight. The Cummins B engine weights some 1150 lbs with EGR, more than twice the weight of the Hemi.

Assuming it would fit reasonably, it would be very nose heavy.

BTW, are there any news on the VM V6 ?
