So it's been a while since our family has owned a jeep, are all the 3.6L jeep engines loud?
We traded in a 2013 Cadillac SRX Performance with a 3.6L and we couldn't tell if it was running from outside the vehicle. With the Jeep, if we remote start from inside my wife's work and come out you can here it from across a packed parking lot.
It runs great and were not having any issues, it's just a little louder than we would have imagined. I have a GMC Dually with the 6.6l turbo diesel and her jeep is louder.
Is this the norm? I've checked the fluid levels making sure the dealer didn't miss anything, everything is topped off. The rear exhaust of the vehicle isn't bad, just a loud engine.
Definitely something wrong. Have a 2015 Summit with the 3.6L and it's almost too quite for my taste at idle speed (would like a little more exhaust rumble). Test drove a 2017 Summit and it too was VERY quite. Not sure what the problem is, but you should take it back to the dealer and find out.
I have a '17 GC Trailhawk, just like DRBSRT, it's a little quiet for my taste as well. Time to replace the intake and exhaust soon. I would bring it in to service to be sure.
It's not loud when driving, just sitting in park. The exhaust note is quieter than the engine, I just have never heard such a loud running engine from the outside.
And from the inside of the jeep you can't hear the engine running, but when you get out it's loud.
Guess it's just us or I would have found other threads commenting on this when I did a search.
A cold engine is often louder then when it's warmed up. Is the noise as loud once the throttle closes down? Hard to imagine it being louder than a 6.6l d.
Ok I did a test. Not scientific but way less subjective than my ear and memory.
I put a Professional SPL meter between my wifes 2011 VW CC 2.0L 4 Cylinder Turbo car and the 2017 Summit Jeep. This was sitting on a table saw (waste height) just about inline with the front bumper of each car.
Started each up.
I let both idle down. Blowers and Radio were off on both.
By the way, make sure it's not the blower on Max that you might be hearing as I'm sure it can be heard outside and I did not measure that.
The Jeep Summit measured 61dB
The VW CC measured 77dB
The VW was the only reference I had. But the Summit was VERY quiet from the outside the Jeep but inside the garage !!
My 2012 GC had an extreme left header AND exhaust leak and was very noisy in close quarters. When I bought my 16 GC it was silent. I even had a guy come up to me one day at the grocery store while I was in reverse who said he couldn't tell if my lights were just stuck on or if I was actually running. Unless the fan is running it is quieter than most other new vehicles.
Our 3.6 Overland has always been really loud, especially in the morning when you start it. It sounds like an old diesel tractor. Especially when I start it next to my X5 lol
We dropped our jeep off about a week later from my first post to have some auto guard products applied to our jeep that our dealer provides, ever since then the jeep is almost as quiet as our Cadillac was.
Didn't think about updating this thread or asking the dealer what they did but whatever was causing the jeep to seem so loud has gone away. I believe the fan started on high with the jeep and stayed on?
I looked on the mopar owner website and it has "scheduled Maintenance" and "Car/truck wash" down for that day.
