The manual also states that you should change oil no matter the mileage at 6 months time.

8k miles on conventional oil is ridiculous. Your just asking for sludge problems. Conventional oil will break down way before 8k miles.

I'm getting my first oil change done at 1000 miles in order to get the metal shavings/particles out. Then I'm switching over to a full synthetic which will enable me to follow the manual's 8k miles intervals.

Mine finally went off at 7,500 I was pissed. No 1K mile warning or even a few hundred miles, just all of a sudden Change Oil Now......What a waste of a system.

Well I have freebie oil change coupon with the dealer so I'll go ahead and get it changed. Hopefully, it won't call for another change in 3500 miles--with modern oils that's just a waste.

Not to try and start a, but how do you know that?
I would change the oil in my truck at 7500 and oil analysis would tell me it could go another 2000 but I chose not too. These are not your dads/granpas oil.

Yeah, I'm thinking the 8000 miles = sludged is full of crap. Maybe with the oil from 20 years ago and with a crankcase 2/3 the size, but not with modern oils in that volume. If you were going to sludge it up, why is the manufacturer recommendation that long? They'd be on the hook for a lot of new engines for those who bought extended warranties and followed the manual to the letter.

If you read the manual 4th edition on Page 534 once the oil indicator comes on you should have your oil changed within 500 miles.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
The Scheduled Maintenance services listed in this
manual must be done at the times or mileages specified
to protect your vehicle warranty and ensure the best
vehicle performance and reliability. More frequent maintenance
may be needed for vehicles in severe operating
conditions, such as dusty areas and very short trip
driving. Inspection and service should also be done
anytime a malfunction is suspected.
The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is
time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance.
On Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)
equipped vehicles “Oil Change Required” will be displayed
in the EVIC and a single chime will sound,
indicating that an oil change is necessary.
Based on engine operation conditions the oil change
indicator message will illuminate, this means that service
is required for your vehicle. Have your vehicle serviced
as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km).
NOTE:

The oil change indicator message will not monitor the

time since the last oil change. Change your vehicles oil
if it has been 6 months since your last oil change even
if the oil change indicator message is NOT illuminated.

Change your engine oil more often if you drive your

vehicle off-road for an extended period of time.

Under no circumstances should oil change intervals

exceed 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 6 months, whichever
comes first.
Your authorized dealer will reset the oil change indicator
message after completing the scheduled oil change. If a
scheduled oil change is performed by someone other
than your authorized dealer, the message can be reset by

I've been hanging out on BITOG(Bob is the oil guy) forum for too long I think
Anyway, use whatever oil you wish, whatever intervals you wish as it's your Jeep, your money.

Re: Oil Change at 3500 mi---What the h$%&

Looking back, I have no idea why I bought the oil change plan when I purchased the vehicle. Twelve oil changes over three years for $250. But at the time I thought it was a good deal. Looks like mine is going to have an oil change every three months. (the primary reason is that I want to tray and get my money's worth even though it's not that much)

Move to synthetic at 1000 miles, i will be changing my oil in December every year, and thats it. These are modern engines and modern oils, stop throwing money away. My BMW would go 15k. You know why they recommend 15k on BMW? Because in Europe, oil changes are included in car prices, so the dealer is responsible to change the oil on manufacturer recommendations. When the onus is on them, the manuals sing a different tune. If only americans would venture from the jiffy lube slogan thats been draining your pockets for years.

The manuals do sing a different tune. Thing is, the dealers and other auto service businesses still push the 3000 mile interval because it's easy money. It was not that long ago when it was indeed the manufacturer required interval, and many still think "hey, it won't hurt." So every 3000 miles, it's another $30 or so. While you're in there, they'll suggest all kinds of other things not mentioned in the service schedule to boost profits.

The manufacturers don't push the dealers on this, but if you read the manuals, most vehicles nowadays have a 7500+ mile oil change interval.
