When the onus is on them, the manuals sing a different tune. If only americans would venture from the jiffy lube slogan thats been draining your pockets for years.
I hope you don't have any engine warranty work done because the owner’s manual says every 6 months at a minimum no matter how many miles (See post number 20 in this thread straight from the 4th edition 2011 WK2 Manual).

Re: Oil Change at 3500 mi---What the h$%&

Something that many of you are forgetting is that todays conventional oil is much better than that of the '80's. Also don't for get these engines hold more oil in reserve than the engines of yesterday. The Hemi holds 7 Quarts...when the old V-8's held 5 at best. The Pentastar V6 is 6 Quarts. Then theres the Oil life monitor and these engines are much more refined than in the past. I'm sticking to the manual until the warranty is expired. When it expires I' still sticking to the manual bacause if its good enough for ChryCo to warranty it then its good enough for me past the warranty date and miles.

What the manual states is for conventional oil, not synthetic. At 15k miles or 1yr, you will not have any oil breakdown. And the dealer cannot tell how many miles between oil changes. Even with the resets, many times mine is not been reset by the dealer in the past.

I just completed my first change @ 650 miles, went to Pennzoil Ultra 100% Synthetic 5W-20 (brand new stuff in the 5w20 weight with a lot of rave reviews). I'll probably change it again after my late spring trip as I'll be towing 5000+ lbs over roughly 3000 miles which could easily be construed as severe usage.

I immediately noticed that the "Hemi Tick" at idle is completely gone with the Pennzoil. The oil that came out was in good shape, a testament to the filter I suppose. It was, however, very thin. Much thinner at both high temp (150 degrees F when it came out) and at ambient temp (76 degrees F) than what went in. That alone tells me it had already begun to break down.

Am I excessive, probably but it's my money and time.

What is the "Hemi tick" to which I often see a reference? Mine makes no tick noise. Is it the full floating pistons or a poorly pumped lifter or an exhaust noise like the old Oldsmobile Rocket V8s made?

sorry for the dumb question but the message just comes on? On my last car it would give me a oil life %. I only have 500 miles on it and was looking for the oil life.

Yeah, it just comes on... usually 500 miles before the computer thinks it's absolutely time. So it isn't like you have to readjust your entire schedule to do it RIGHT NOWNOWNOW. My wife's Acura has that oil life % indicator, which is nice, but even that dings the maintenance minder at a 10% life remaining point. 500 miles is not far off that 10% mark, but yeah, a more detailed measurement would be nice.

Still, note that it's basically just lighting up at a given interval- the computer sees how you're driving, then kicks it on for a given service interval (if it's anything like it was in my Patriot). So if it comes on at 7500 miles, it's going for the 8K mile interval. At 3500 miles, it's going for the "severe duty" interval of 4000 miles.

When you take your vehicle in for warranty work and the dealer asks you who changes your oil and you say you do it yourself (which is ok). Then his next question is please show me the reciepts of Oil changes for each six months since you purchased the vehicle...I sure hope you can produce where you purchased 7 quarts of 5W-20 and a quality Oil filter that works on the Hemi/Pentastar??? I believe in the annual Oil changes and the Oil will last 12 months and 15K miles but to get warranty work done thru ChryCo it may best to follow the manual and keep your reciepts. Because if you tell him you change it every December or 15K miles....its probably not going to fly if something happens (God forbid) to your engine.

I have to agree here. I have read so many stories of warranty refusal from lack of documentation. I am so paranoid of it that I save all my filters in old 5 gallon pails. When I finally trade in I bring them to recycle. The look on there faces would be priceless seeing the filters and reciepts

I'm new to Hemi's but as I've read and observed in my WK2 and the father in laws older Ram it usually only does it at idle when hot and IS dependent on the quality and service interval of the oil. What I'm hearing is valve train related, not pistons, rods or any other hard part.

Mine was quiet for the first 500 miles but started to make a very slight ticking sound at idle when hot. It was so low that you could only hear it from outside the truck (noticed it when I walked around the front of the vehicle at an ATM). Since the switch in oil (and probably partly because it's new oil) I haven't heard it. Not that it won't come back, just stating what I've observed.

Re: Oil Change at 3500 mi---What the h$%&

For everyone that says no need to change the oil every 3500 miles. I sell engines for a living. I've been around them all my life - Ive read many studies on oil and the breakdown process. Sludge is something I hear every day. Change your oil every 3000- 3500 miles.

Did I mention I sell engines? I sell, on average, 20-25 engines a day. It's what I know It's what I do. -

Do you want to know the #1 reason I will get a call from someone that needs and engine? - It's lack of oil changes. Lack of oil changes. Your daddy didnt bring you up right. or somthing.

Change the way you think.
