Overland's V6 Pentastar Engine?

Hey guys, I will be honest to tell you that I don't know a lot about engines. I just like the pickup I currently have in my 2006 Acura RDX (specs below) & how it drives on the freeways. I don't want to go backwards but don't see the need of the V8.

My questions:

(1) How does my current engine compare to the Jeep's 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar engine (290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm)?

(2) Will it have the same type of pickup and acceleration on the freeways?

(3) If you currently have the V6 in the Overland, do you recommend it (or sorry you didn't get the Hemi)?

Very happy with mine. Smooth, good pickup, ample power. It's not a screamer off the line, but on ramps are easy. Gas mileage is OK, but on;y have 1600 miles on it. I have Cummins for towing the toys, so did not need the Hemi. I do wish it had a sixth (+) cog, though. Bruce

Just remember the GC is a lot heavier so do not expect the same.

All I can say is go test drive both first, it's the only way to really know.

I'm at 6000 miles, and would not trade mine for the Hemi.

I do not tow anything though, so that may be a factor in what you do.

I find the 3.6 to have plenty of juice, while still being able to take down 550 mile chunks of highway on a tank if needed.

Go jump in the saddle of each though, see what you think.

I agree with bimmer. The v6 is perfectly adequate for the grand Cherokee if you are not towing. It doesn't take off from a stop, but once it's rolling I was surprised that it does move pretty well when you get on it. I would recommend the 6 and have no regrets getting it. What did you think, you had to have test drove one before you ordered your summit.

I did test both the hemi and V6. I liked them both but was a tad concern the V6 wasn't fast enough for how I dart in & out of lanes on freeways. On paper, it should be more powerful than my RDX but I never took into consideration the weight, etc.

I haven't driven an RDX, so I dont know how the turbo lag is, but I would think that the v6 would be a little better for throttle response darting in and out of lanes. Correct me if I'm wrong but when you punch it on the highway the RDX is going to downshift (same with the GC) and then you need to wait a second for the turbo to spool.

the Pentastar is a pretty smooth engine imho. I test drove the HEMI first and the acceleration was pretty good, but I didn't think I really needed the power and the HEMI is about 300lbs+ heavier than the Pentastar. Off the line the 6 does a decent job. At speed, I think it's even better. I have no problem at all passing cars on the highway and its almost effortless. Not to mention it does so really smoothly. I was driving back from Pittsburgh to NJ and needed to pass a lot of tractor trailers on the way, overtaking them and other slow cars was really easy. The 6 should be pretty good for you, and if you want to dart in and out of lanes that fast then just buy a proper sports car!

It is great smooth engine and anyone who complained on low power should drive older JGC V6 with 210hp Also, remember gas could jump up lot any day and i need truck to drive not to stay.
Do not compare RDX to much heavier truck, it will be slower on acceleration even on V8 since weight and tranny design.

I live in Northern Virginia where there is always traffic...so I opted for V6. I only tow once and a while so I think the V6 is perfectly fine.

It's hard to compare completely different vehicles.

The V-6 is a spinner, so in order to really get going, you need to force a kickdown or otherwise wind it out a bit; while it moves the GC acceptably, it's no sports car. IMO, it's more than good enough for regular driving unless you're hauling heavy loads or spending a lot of time at high elevations (as in a mile or so above sea level; I drove mine through the Smoky Mountains and had zero issues).

I've not regretted not buying the Hemi. Sure, the extra torque would be nice, but I just don't think that for me it would have been worth the extra couple thousand bucks and more frequent fill ups with more expensive fuel.

I have to echo those sentiments. The extra torque would have been nice, but I like the range that I can go on a single tank of gas. I've found it has plenty of power when merging onto the interstate in passing situations. I can't wait until an aftermarket computer programmer comes out so the shift points can be adjusted. That's my main complaint is the dead spot when accelerating. Sometimes the pedal does feel a bit sluggish, but it's *not* the engine, it's the programming.
