Pentastar Throttle delay

Well after owning the GK2 now for about 2.5 months I have confirmed that there is a significant throttle delay in the mid range and sometimes even when you burry the accelerator it will stay in the high gear and not kick down..

The GK2 replaced my '98 Explorer Sport that has a manual Throttle - after spending a little time driving the Explorer, the Jeeps throttle lag is definate. I also noticed this when we first bought my wifes 2007 Camry with the V6 and Electric throttle.

This Jeep Pentastar engine has great power but it is not being utilized properly by the poor fly by wire Throttle- lack of downshifting and proper gear selection kill performance.

I am told the Throttle lag can be totaly eliminated with a good tune and custom calibration device like the Diablo Sport?

Does anyone know when a tuner will come out for the Pentastar engine?

Diablo has never done anything but the hemi. I would look more for sct or superchips. Also......give b&g performance a call and see what they can do with your pcm.

Re: Pentastar Throttle delay

It's the tuning of the throttle curves and transmission management, not the physical throttle by wire hardware that the problem. If you have the terrain-selec and put it in sport mode the throttle response is very very good.

So yes, a good tuner should either adjust the throttle calibration or let you change the curve yourself which will take care of the problem.

Re: Pentastar Throttle delay

I do completely agree with the Pentastar throttle delay as described by 'Lazzman' and I am wondering if Chrysler is doing or planning to do something about that.

This is really the only thing I dislike about my WK2 and ALL Pentastar owners I talked to agree. I hope Chrysler is reading that

I would be hesitant going to a tuner and invest money as IMHO this is a design failure and needs to be corrected (e.g. with a flash update).

Re: Pentastar Throttle delay

It's really odd that the auto engineers think the Drive by wires is an improvement? I own 2 different brand vehicles with Drive by wire electric throttle control and they both act very similar. My Toyota Camry V6 is a 2007 model that was purchased in 2006 and they haven'c come up with an with an upgrade yet to the sluggish throttle reponse- so I doubt Chrsyler will.

I mention the tuner Upgrade because several guy that do tuning for a living have stated that one of the best things about using a tuner on a new vehicle with electronic throttle control, is that it completely eliminates throttle lag.

How much better the pentastar would be with Instant throttle response and downshifts- so sad.

Re: Pentastar Throttle delay

Lazz, FWIW the ETC also causes a lag on the Hemi if one has been driving conservatively and then seeks to stomp on it. As others state, either sport mode or a reset of the ETC can help, but I agree, ETC is annoying as hell.

Re: Pentastar Throttle delay

Yes, it definately depends on the way you drive it. I have been driving conservatively to save gas and when I go to stomp on it, it feels like a 170hp weez box. Then again if I have been driving it hard it really flies....

I have the basic automatic transmission so I guess I am SOL with the sport mode option.

How do you reset the ETC??

3. Turn your key to the "On" position (but don't start the car), and wait for the 'idiot' lights to go out.
4. Press down on the accelerator, and let it back up.
5. Turn your car off.
6. Re-start your car and cruise up and down the road testing your throttle responsiveness.
Depending on how fast/slow you do the 4th step, your throttle will either become more or less sensitive/responsive.
Repeat steps #1 through #5 as needed until you're satisfied that your throttle response is as good as it's going to get.

Remember these things 'learn' how you drive so if you drive like Grandma for a few days, it's adjusts accordingly.

Re: Pentastar Throttle delay

I find the throttle delay highly dangerous. Following situation (just happened today): partly icey road, winter conditions, highway. Cruising with 45 mph. Initializing acceleration because I want to pass the car in front of me ...I push the thruttle slightly, nothing happens, then I push it more firm, the V6 all of a sudden comes with all it's power. Light curve in front of me, again, winter conditions, SCARY.

Having a seamless acceleration through all rpm levels is extremely challenging!

Chrysler/Jeep has to do something about that because in case of accidents people will start to sue them.

(...and my Laredo X 4x4 doesn't give me the option to change into the Sport mode as it does not come with select-terrain)

Re: Pentastar Throttle delay

I agree. It is very difficult to drive this car without an erratic throttle response....it has no rhyme or reason to the way it responds to a change in throttle pressure, except when you "floor it" to try to get some response and then it surges so bad that its always a surprise.

I do not understand why Jeep has not fixed this yet!!!!
