??? The cooler coolant temp helps prevent pre-ignition/detonation created by excessive combustion temps......

Re: Performance Mods - need recommendations

I've heard mixed opinions about the 180 thermostat, with say my Volant (no tune obivously for the WK2) would it really make a difference in perfomance/efficiency?

A 180 stat is best coupled with a modified fan engagement so keep the temps lower all of the time and not just when the vehicle is moving. because there is no tuning support available yet, there is no way to modify the fan settings.

However, given that many choose to run low octane gas in the Hemi (87 or 89), a 180 stat would be beneficial in preventing knock retard. The PCM is very sensitive to potential spark knock events and corrects these by overcompensating, taking out significantly more timing advance than necessary to simply correct the spark knock condition.

I had a 180 thermostat on my Magnum. All it did was throw codes

How hard is one to install and whats the bests place to look for one? No harm in trying, if it throws codes I'll switch back. As long as its not a huge bia to put in.

I haven't done it on a WK2, but every other vehicle I've ever had, it's 2 bolts on the thermostat cover. Pretty basic.

However, I would argue that without a tune to take advantage of the lower temp, you won't see any benefit, and may even hurt fuel economy.

Re: Performance Mods - need recommendations

well I want the power and don't care about the economy. What's out there? I've seen strokers, cams, short blocks, heads, etc. for other Hemis. Is iths an option or am I stuck still by the PCM?

You're stuck with the PCM. I have a friend with a 2011 Ram that was able to get tuned using a flashed 2010 PCM...but no telling for sure if that would work for the Jeeps.

The stock tune is very rich and leaves alot of room for airflow mods so it is very possible that you can do full exhaust, intake, ported TB etc etc and still be at a safe AFR. I wouldnt do a cam, with the variable cam timing of the newer Hemis you not only stand at great risk of poor street manners, but also piston to valve contact. Comp makes a phaser limiter which restricts the movement of the cam, however, you still have the PCM to deal with.

From whatI have seen, a cam swap is not nearly as necessary to make big power on these than the fixed-cam Hemis.

Just remember, you can try to reduce engine temp, but unless you go to a cooler spark plug the combustion temps will remain the same.
