Performance, shifting, and mpg

I use this forum the way I use good coaches so I've a probably confused question. I have the v6 with all the updates and it drives smoothly and powerfully. Most of my weekly driving is stop and go with only a few 2 miles stretches without interference. Mostly I drive 35 to 45 mph. Long ago I drove BMW's but with children and some off road interest I've shifted to Jeep. I don't miss the clutch in stop and go uphill. But here's my question. Lately, I think I have only been getting around 14 or 15 mpg. Any strategies that might involve shifting that could improve this? I'd like to have some fun and pay my rent. Thanks.

Re: Performance, shifting, and mpg

As you mention, stop and go, as well as hills all effect MPG. I believe the standard EPA MPG for the v6 is 16 city and 23 highway. So it sounds about right for the driving environment your in. I have a 5.7 so can't comment on my actual MPG compared to yours.

Also you mention shifting, but you can't really shift in the Jeep. The Tranny allows you to limit the car to a specific maximum gear but you can't "shift" it such as some other automatic transmissions.

Sticker mileage is 16 and 22 for the 4x4, 3.6L. I try to drive with a light foot and am getting 18/23.

Re: Performance, shifting, and mpg

Is there 10% or so ethanol in your locality's gasoline? If so, that should rob you of one mpg or so, as EPA numbers are derived from straight gasoline.

Is that really true, wow talk about being sneaky, isn't most of the USA using at least 10% ethanol?

Check this map out. It might come up as a "?" the first time, but click it again and you'll see the map. It shows all ethanol-free gas stations in the country. None in CA..

Cool Map, can't believe the abundance of southern states that are ethanol free. Why is the northeast next to none.. Is ethanol a law in some states or just a way to extend gas further for companies?

Re: Performance, shifting, and mpg

Ethanol is used instead of MTBE to reduce smog in many metropolitan areas and congested regions, as MTBE ruins groundwater. The South, relatively free from smog, isn't impacted as much.

However, ethanol above that 10% has become something of a gimmick to snare the farm/agribusiness vote and campaign contributions. So the EPA is moving towards getting all fuel up to 15% as a voluntary consumer option, at least initially.

That higher level will cause damage to some older vehicles, but the WK2 can handle up to 85%, nominally. Still, ethanol significantly reduces mileage, quite aside from the roster of other problems created by large-scale ethanol production -- which I won't get into because they are really OT for this forum.
