Ported Throttle Body - WK2

Soooo, it's been at least three months since the last mod, figured it was 'bout time to get a bonafide rocket scientist involved for some performance jou jou. Since we're all waiting on the tuners, may as well get as much free air flow as possible so she's ready and waiting.

Ported Throttle Body by Flyin Ryan:

PTB vs. Stock - Frontside (intake side):

PTB vs. Stock - Backside (engine side):

Stock mounted - installation only requires mounting TB with four light green bolts, drive by wire connector, and intake tube:

The new Volant CAI just happened to show up at the same time so on it went along with Flyin Ryan's PTB:

Rather than post a bunch of subjective commentary about how much more resposive the Hemi is now, which is true, thought it was worthy of a full butt dyno chart:

Cant believe i didnt wipe off that extra polishing compound. Actually a little embarassed about that. Sorry Bernard.

I am guessing by the size of the "after" posterior that the difference is pretty significant

Re: Ported Throttle Body - WK2

Very nice looking setup!

Is the opening on the intake manifold side large enough to handle the new ported size of the TB? And have you noticed any change to the smoothness of the engine at idle? I had a TB ported years ago (on a much smaller engine) but it immediatly had some idle issues.

Also, hows the sound of the Volant and is it 4" tubing?

Re: Ported Throttle Body - WK2

^Don't think the PTB eats more gas all else being equal including use of right pedal. Ryan will have to comment on that though.

That said, I spent the good part of this afternoon flying around town with the windows open, killing dinosaurs. Feels stronger mid to high throttle from say 30mph up to 70mph, or from 55 to 100. Shifts seem easier or smoother. Idle is the same as stock, roundly 1100 rpm in park and 800 in drive while stopped, smooth.

The Volant is solid, though I also feel the same about the Bwoody. The latter may have been a hair louder from the engine bay.

Solid product and good guy. Thanks Ryan.

Assuming you drive similiarly to before installation- no. I dont make any guarantees on mileage because it varies on so much, especially on driving style. BUT, many of the people I have done porting for have come back to me and mentioned increased gas mileage, 1 mpg seems to be the the norm for those who comment about it afterwards. It has to do with the engine not having to work as hard to pull the same amount of load.

Moose got his from me. Many people also use the Fastman TB (thefastman.com), as he is able to machine a true 84mm bore. I do mine by hand so all of my TBs are taper ported to the OEM blade. There are other companies that either do taper porting (HHP) or boring (Moes, etc).

For the life of me I cant remember what the final measurement on Moose's TB ended up being on the back side. I think I made it somewhere around 86-87mm. The early WK1 manifolds were ~87mm, and I did not have any measurements for a WK2 manifold so I erred on the conservative side, but not so much to leave significant gains on the table. I know made the inlet 85.5mm at the edge, with the OD being about 86.25. Either way the manifold inlet from the factory is able to support the larger TB without issue. Stock, the TB inlet and backside are both 81.5mm.

This is the first WK2 TB i've done (same TB as the WK1s, different PCM/bus though) but I have sold probably 20-25 Hemi TBs in the last 18 months, I have only had one person with a B&G Flash'd 05 5.7 WK1 have any significant idle/surge issues. It was temporary however and went away after a full reset.

I know on some of the other Jeep/Dodge applications Ive done some have had high idle, or surging, and every now and then a CEL upon first startup, but it always goes away within a few minutes, or taking off down the road. Mopar speed density PCMs across the board are pretty resilient to minor modifications like these.

The aforementioned issues usually can be avoided altogether if you disconnect the battery and drain the electrical system prior to startup. I dont bother disconnecting the battery, but some people do it for peace of mind, I guess.
