Royal Purple and the 5.7L Hemi

I recently contacted Royal Purple regarding the use of their 5W-20 motor oil in the 5.7L Hemi motor. Below is the exchange...

Hello,

I have recently purchased a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L HEMI MDS engine. Chrysler specifies that engine oil for this engine must meet the Chrysler MS-6395 standard. Does Royal Purple 5W-20 meet this standard?

Thanks,
Dean

Their reply...

Good Afternoon Mr. P,

The Royal Purple SAE 5W-20 (part #01520, quart bottle) meets or exceeds performance and protection requirements described by MS-6395, as well as other OEM special standards. However, our SAE 5W-20 carries the API SL license, not the API SM license. This may conflict with the recommendation in your manual, but API SM is not a performance specification. It is an emissions specification. The API SM license restricts anti-wear additive with the intent of possibly extending the useful life of a catalytic converter to past the 120,000 mile warranty that auto makers are required to give. We have many customers that have chosen to use our API SL oil instead of an API SM in their late model vehicles, and we have not had one report of fouled emissions equipment due to our oil.

This is a new car, so we understand your concern about warranty. If your strict compliance to the OEM warranty is your primary concern, we recommend you purchase your oil at a Dodge dealership (and keep your receipts). If engine performance and protection are your primary concern, Royal Purple SAE 5W-20 is a great choice for your Grand Cherokee.

Thanks for considering Royal Purple and have a great day!

Best Regards,

Christopher Barker

FWIW, I still intend on using Royal Purple. I have never heard of anyone being denied warranty service based on using their oil. That said, I think that this was worth sharing with the community for those of you concerned with strict compliance of manufacturer's specifications.

One more little tid-bit I copied directly from the Royal Purple web site that I thought was worth sharing...

Can I put Royal Purple into my brand new car?

Yes. Royal Purple currently offers many viscosity grades of API-licensed motor oils. To allow for proper break-in of the engine, Royal Purple recommends waiting until the manufacturer’s first scheduled oil change or a minimum of 2,000 miles in new gasoline engines.

Re: Royal Purple and the 5.7L Hemi

good info..working in the shop i did hear of rare occasions where if your motor was to fail and the warranty covered it they would sample your oil. I think that is why RP is covering themselves by leaving the decision up to you.

From the Mobil 1 website, so why mess with Royal Purple?:

"Mobil 1 5W-20 fully synthetic motor oil meets or exceeds the requirements of:
ILSAC GF-4 energy conserving viscosity that flows quickly during cold starts.
API SM/CF
ACEA A1/B1
It is suitable for use in the following applications:
Ford WSS-M2C930-A
Ford WSS-M2C925-A
Chrysler MS-6395"

Since Amsoil doesn't at this time have any recommendations this is what I would look at.

Its all brand\market war..if you go with M1, RP, or Ams you wont have any problems. The dealer says to stick with theirs because they want the money. I can safely say your not going to have an issue sticking with the bigger 3

I agree and I certainly didn't want to start a brand war.
I simply thought that I had some good information to share. Hopefully there are some that will find it useful.
