Thanks Nbtstatic. On 2/7 I ordered an identical WK2 as yours. I was on the fence about a couple of things but your pictures sealed the deal. Very nice.

Re: "Stop Changing Your Oil" Breaking the 3,000-Mile Habit

I had my first oil change done at 2000kms as directed by the dealer. but after I took it in they wrote in my log book the next oil change is at 22,000 kms, which is a 20,000 km interval. Even on my 09 MB CLS 63 AMG I change every 8,000 kms as recommended so the 20k interval on the jeep seems out of proportion. Is this normal or did the dealer just make a mistake?

Re: "Stop Changing Your Oil" Breaking the 3,000-Mile Habit

Back in the old days when they said to change the oil every 3,000 miles, that oil was actually good for 10,000. We tested this when I was a mechanical engineering student in college. Like anything else, the auto manufacturers never let the timing of routine maintenance approach the point of there actually being a problem.

These days, especially with synthetic oil, all you need to do is let your cars computer tell you when to change it. There are too many reasons to count why oil last longer these days... but it basically has to do with a combo of better oil, better computers, bigger oil pans, and better built motors.

I still change my Camaros oil every 3K miles. That car came from the factory filled with Mobil One AND I push it much harder than my Liberty. Every since I put Mobil One in my old ZJ, I have always changed the oil at 6K..... 7.5K with my Lincoln.

Has anyone seen any facts on how long an oil filter lasts? I don't know about you guys but its to easy to change my oil every 3K why push it when you can have the piece of mind. $12.00 for oil is worth it IMO at Walmart.

Re: "Stop Changing Your Oil" Breaking the 3,000-Mile Habit

FWIW, I had every intention of my first oil change being sooner on the WK2, but just didn't get around to it.

The Oil Change message did just come on at 3,600 miles so in she goes.

The way I see it is that if the car came from the factory with a longer service then I will use the base filter. For cars like my old Jeep, I used mobil one filter since Jeep claimed that it should go 3000 miles before an oil change. I also use mobil one filter in my Camaro since I push it hard. For my old lincoln and my Liberty, plain jane base filter is what I use. Plus $12 is for the basic stuff. A number of people here (including me) put the good stuff in their cars.

For 12.50 I can get that 5 quart jug o oil. It's name brand Quaker State which you all should know is SOPOUS Products. Sopous has a decent share of the oil market and has several different brands.

With regards to going longer I like having a fresh oil change at every 3k because the motor runs smoother after a fresh change.

Re: "Stop Changing Your Oil" Breaking the 3,000-Mile Habit

Hi Guys.

My Overland 07 plate allows for 12,500 miles on the service indicator which when I asked the dealer recently they stated that it could in theory go further with the fact that it held 10 litres of oil. However, they would not be drawn as to the chance the filter could become blocked and damage could occur.

However, as we only drive an average of 8-9K per year, but city driving, I can live with an oil change every 12 months, regardless of whether it has reached the 12,500 miles or not. At the end of the day it is cheaper to replace the oil than a replacement engine!!!

I know as my other vehicle had an engine blow at 150K and a nice expense to go with it! So for the sake of 200 - 300 once every year it is a small price to pay compared to a replacement engine running into thousands of pounds or dollars!!
