Re: Synthetic Oil

I use mobil 1 in my other 2 cars and probably will continue using it in my jeep.

My question is, it tells u when to change the oil right? So do you wait til it tells you or just stick with an interval? I do my other 2 cars every 5k.

The EVIC calculates based on it's duty during an average 8000 mile interval, so it may be a little before or a little after 8000 miles. Every 8000 mile, every 6 months or when the EVIC tells you to change oil, whichever comes first.

I bring my own oil and filter. That way I know what I'm getting.

Re: Synthetic Oil

Since this is a new thread, I thought I'd ask the question here as opposed to searching old threads

I have a new 2012 Overland V6. The dealer told me to do my 1st oil change at 3000 miles. I've read here and there on these forums just to wait till 8000.

My original paperwork that came with the car had an addendum recommending the use of synthetic. I asked the dealer in the service department and he said synthetic wasn't necessary. He said, with these “new cars” there is no need. So I called Jeep Chrysler and couldn't get a straight answer out of them. They told me to use regular oil or synthetic if it meets the prescribed standards. The customer service representative was just repeating a party line, and would not answer the question as to what was recommended even in light of the addendum.

Still seeking an answer,

Thanks

You can find a dealer in your area, or like I did just sign up for their discounted dealer plan for $20.00. I buy a lot of it for friends and use it for my boat and cars so it's worth it to me.

I just can't see paying the premium for Amsoil or Royal Purple, etc... if you change your oil every 3-5K. Everything I've read or experienced seems to say that below 5K most any synthetic will pretty much perform the same. Under extreme duty (long interval times, high heat, heavy towing) I might, but it's way overkill for 95% if you change at 5K.

Re: Synthetic Oil

It always comes to the same thing in these oil threads. Brand favorites, use what you want. Change it when you want, with whatever oil makes you feel better.

I have the same question. However, I noticed a part number in the bottom right hand corner of that addendum that reads "12SRT8-126-AAA". Since the SRT8 calls for 5W-40, I'm leaning toward this memo is meant for the SRT Grand Cherokee only.

For the V-6, the owner's manual calls for 5W-30. I plan on going to a full synthetic 5W-30 for the initial oil / filter change at around 2000 miles to get the factory fill out and remove the initial break-in wear particles.

You can order it on-line. However you pay for shipping. But if you do one of the membership options, you get a discount on the products that reduces the overall cost per unit for most products.

I had a guy locally that I used to get AMSOIL from but he seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. I have not been able to reach him so I resorted to on-line ordering myself. He charged me shipping anyway so no real change except no it comes to my door.
