5.7Unlimited is just really nice
Re: Test drove V-6 today - Not excited

Has anyone driven a 2011 with the 5.7 that currently owns a wk with a 5.7? Is the 3.47 gear ratio horrible on pickup or not too bad?

I didn't have that experience at all. We ended up visiting two dealerships. At the first one the salesman basically handed me the key to the Hemi Limited and off we went. Not even a low pressure attempt to sell. At the second the salesman spent a fair amount of time with us and never even mentioned any 2010 models; I guess we gave off a vibe that said we weren't remotely interested in the previous generation (if I wanted one, I'd have had one).

What's horrible is the antiquated 5-speed. I know that we're all fired up about the new W2 but I ,for one, am going to have some will power and wait for the 8-speed tranny next year. This, at least, will help deliver the acceleration and MPG comparable with the 40K+ competition.
Why buy now and regret it over the next 5+years or more when you have a weak 5-speed and those who waited have a state of the art 8-speed like the BMW X-3, X-5, Porsche, VW, LR4, etc.

I was fairly impressed with the V6. Comparing it to my 06 4.7 of some years ago...it had much more power and tq. A few little things done to it and it will be a screamer.....

Can't agree with that. I drove the 2011 V6 and got into my 4.7 right afterward. The 4.7 has much more grunt.

Re: Test drove V-6 today - Not excited

Maybe its because i'm getting older or I already have a fast car but come on, the V6 is fine for everyday driving. Hell, my V6 is fine for everyday driving and its slower than the WK2. If I was looking at the new WK2, I wouldn't even look at the 5.7L.

I can agree the tq down low is not what it was in the 05-07 4.7....but up where it counts...and where the 05-07 absolutely DIES......1800 rpm plus and reallly above 4000 rpms...the 3.6 runs away and shows its 290 ponies

If I was looking into an SRT WK, it wouldn't be my DD and it would be my sole goal for it to be fast or at least quick.

Honestly, I think once you get past about 5 cogs, you aren't adding much with modern engines. If the powerband is small, it's good to have more gears to keep the engine where it does its best. If you get good power from low RPM all the way up, it's less an issue as far as I see it.

I am sure there is something to be said about having a "state of the art 8 speed" like the competition, but IMO, a decent 5 speed suits me just fine. As I've said before, the V-6 and W5A580 transmission work quite well in this incarnation.

Re: Test drove V-6 today - Not excited

The Grand Cherokee has gone from a roughly 2 ton brick on wheels (WJ) to nearly a 2.5 ton brick on wheels (WK2). Those who think the new V6 is plenty of engine to move the new pig are going to eventually be here at JG asking how they can squeeze a little more power out of their Grand. Will the new V6 move 5,000lbs down the road? Of course it will. Will it do it with power to spare? Highly unlikely.

Go with the 5.7L folks and couple it with the QDII tcase.
