Re: Test drove V-6 today - Not excited

IMO...it moved it just fine and better than my 4.7. Thats just my opinion though after driving it for several miles

Go with the 5.7L folks and couple it with the QDII tcase.
You driven them yet? Preferably both?

The opinion of those who have done so is overwhelming; the Pentastar V-6 is just fine (unless you plan to tow heavy loads or go rock hopping in the mountains). This is even echoed by those notorious for enjoying a positive surfeit of power (enthusiast magazines).

The Hemi just doesn't have that much extra noticeable oomph. Seriously. Not kidding.

I've driven both and my opinion is that off the line both engines feel a lot less than their rated power. Don't get me wrong, the pentastar is a huge improvement over the 3.7 found in the WK. Further, for most buyers the power will be fine. 0-60 in 8.4 is respectable for a SUV. However, for those (like me) coming from a much lighter and better geared WJ, that positively jumps off the line like a scalded cat with the 4.7HO, the pentastar will not do. The hemi isn't that great off the line either but it's broader torque curve gives it more linear acceleration. It might not feel it, but it's a good 1 sec faster to 60, which is huge.

But once again, for most buyers the pentastar is a fine choice power wise. I'd be more concerned with year 1 gremlins.

One second is more than most folks realize in 0-60, but I just don't see it being an issue. The extra power might be usable in something like 50-70mph acceleration (basically simulating passing a much slower vehicle on a highway).

Again, I'll remind folks that the automotive journalists (who've rarely ever found a vehicle with too much power) keep coming down on the side of the V-6. I just don't get the argument that "The Pentastar is weak, get the Hemi" when the vast majority of those who have driven both say otherwise. The Hemi is just fine, but for the majority of owners, unnecessary.

Well I got the V6 RWD because I do not need Hemi power and I will never go off road. I just did not see a need for all of that. I did honestly strongly consider 4wd but I have never needed it and I doubt I ever will.

Re: Test drove V-6 today - Not excited

One of the things I've always liked about Grand Cherokees, at least with regards to the ZJ and WJ, is that they were pretty quick for what they were. At least the V8 flavors were quick. I've never driven a 4.SLOW, the 3.7 V6, or any flavor of WK. Personally, if the new WK2 isn't pretty quick, at least with the Hemi, that would be disappointing.

Unless we're talking about the SRT8, 0-60 time means nothing. If I cared about 0 to 60 times, I'd get a Mustang, not a Jeep.

This thread needs to be made into a sticky so that in a year or so when the inevitable "how to get more power from the Penstar V6" threads begin to appear, it will be relatively easy to see if a few folks words come back to haunt them.

^^^^LOL...thats gonna happen with every engine, EVER made.....

In 1994 when some of these guys were still in diapers.....I was trying to figure a way to get more ponies from my new 1994 320 hp 300 lb ft tq 3000GT VR4. This was long before the car modding craze....
