The opinion of those who have done so is overwhelming; the Pentastar V-6 is just fine (unless you plan to tow heavy loads or go rock hopping in the mountains). This is even echoed by those notorious for enjoying a positive surfeit of power (enthusiast magazines).

The Hemi just doesn't have that much extra noticeable oomph. Seriously. Not kidding.
I think you drove a Hemi with a bad motor then. I drove the v6 and v8 back to back within 10 minutes of each other a few times and the difference is very noticeable. The Hemi doesn't have to downshift every time you think about pressing the gas pedal and very slow uphill turns (which are common in Pittsburgh) is painful in the v6. It kicks down to 1st gear and then it's a huge jump in rpm and it throws you back, then it shifts to 2nd and falls on it's face. The Hemi stays in the gear and is smooth for the hill. There was a few times on my extended test drives that I noticed the v6 struggling where the v8 took it like it supposed to. I am sure the v6 would be fine if you live in an area that is all flat and there are no hills but that ain't here.

The v6 is comparable to the v6 in the new Explorer and other CUV/SUV's with v6's but the v8 is a big step in power. I wanted the Explorer but I wanted it with the ecoboost v6 from the f150 - I would trade my Jeep in tomorrow if Ford made that.

Nope, and there are indeed hills here. But I wasn't hammering it right and left and I'm not afraid of downshifts. The objective test numbers show that the Hemi is not necessarily in a completely different world of performance (1 second to 60 is a big difference, but not night and day from the driver's perspective).

The Hemi is a decent engine and the torque is nice, but my comparison showed me that the V-6 is just fine with this vehicle. Sure, there's more power in the V-8 if you want it, but it isn't mandatory in order to enjoy the vehicle.

I have a V6 LaredoX currently. My last car was a 2007 Subaru WRX, with a built transmission, fully built motor/heads, Dom 3.0XTR, etc. etc. etc. 400WHP.

I miss that thing to death, but it was just an endless money pit that got me in trouble with the cops on a daily basis. While I do wish I had the HEMI, the practicality and comfort of my jeep is unsurpassed. Plus I have my motorcycles for fun.

For me it was night and day between the 6 and the 8. I don't mind the downshifts but the v6 seemed to do them at all the wrong times and went into too low of a gear when it did (because it doesn't have the torque like the hemi does). The v6 is not a bad motor but it struggles compared to the v8.

Well, with the SRT8, I'm hoping to have the practicality and comfort AND some fun at the same time!

Couldn't disagree more. The V6 in the new Ex is horrible. Far more underpowered than the Pentastar in the GC IMO.

I had an Audi S4; the V8 is not going to make you feel anywhere close to the WRX.

EDIT: The issue with the V6 is the throttle calibration, IMHO. I just drove a rental Laredo 4x4 V6 (8000+ miles on the odo) while on a business trip and it moved out a lot better than what I recall when test driving Laredos prior to my Hemi Ltd purchase. It certainly feels more nimble than the GM V6 in their Acadia/Traverse/Enclave that my wife was just looking at before settling on a WK2.

Re: Test drove V-6 today - Not excited

Another happy V6 owner here...

Something to keep in mind is that a lot of V6's out there that people are test driving also suffer from having early version engine and transmission software. This was recently fixed on new production models and was also issued as a Technical Service Bulletin to dealers. This only happened about a month ago so there are MANY vehicles sitting on lots untouched with the old maps. Prior to the update there were some flat spots in the rpm range and a definite drive by wire feel - this has now been eliminated and the whole driving experience is much improved.

Although the +70hp and +130tq of the HEMI are not insignificant numbers, they are also not THAT much more power on a vehicle of this size. You have to remember that you also get an additional 300+ lbs of weight to drag around at all times making the real world difference even smaller. Let's be honest, less than a second over a 1/4 mile when you are in the 15's or 16's is hardly anything at all. If you had a 11 second car and dropped in the tens thats a whole different story. This is a Jeep.

Bottom Line - People are going to buy what suits their needs the best and the V6 (especially with the updates) is still a great choice for many drivers.

No real argument, but with the PCM update, the throttle calibration and shift schedule on the V-6 is FAR better. I wonder if the folks complaining about the Pentastar struggling were driving ones with the outdated software.

New software + Sport mode on the Select Terrain + willingness to use the Autostick feature when need be = no problems. The V-6 has plenty of top end- like I keep saying, it's a spinner. It won't grunt down low like the Hemi, but put 4000+RPM on the clock and you'd best hang on.

Good to know theres an update for the V6. I bought mine back in September, one of the firsts on the lot. Im sure it has the old software, the gear shifting down low sucks. Ill bring this to the service dept. attention

Re: Test drove V-6 today - Not excited

I am a happy V6 owner as well. I also have a Saab Viggen for speeding around and getting tickets. I felt that the V6 was not a lot different from the V8 and did not want to take the mpg hit not to mention the extra $1500 price tag.
