Tow/Haul mode question

I have a 2011 Overland Hemi. TSBs for smoother gear shifting and shuddering problem have been applied. I noticed that when driving in Tow/Haul mode, the gear indicator shows "5."

My question is: Is there any mechanical difference between using Tow/Haul mode and just tapping the shifter to the left to go from "D" to "5"?

I also noticed that at highway speeds engaging the Tow/Haul mode causes a change in RPMs, indicating a gear shift.

Thanks!

Re: Tow/Haul mode question

Tow/Haul causes overdrive to be deselected. It holds gears longer, and revs up a bit more before shifting into the next highest gear.

Gives quicker throttle response.

It also engages engine braking on down hills instead of free wheeling.

Pretty clever button.

Re: Tow/Haul mode question

When not in tow/haul, just tapping the shifter leaves you in 5th gear but disables the MDS. In tow/haul, it moves all the gears down by one, so 5 is actually the previous 4th etc.
Since the trans has 2 2nd gears, it uses the lower one for tow haul. Confusing, but it works well in practice. 4th and 5th are both overdrive gears.

Re: Tow/Haul mode question

can some one advise when towing a caravan 2500kg should i be using the tow haul mode or just leave it in normal mode, and does it have any effect with fuel consumption?

Re: Tow/Haul mode question

Id put it in tow mode when towing anything. The manual suggests it for mountain driving as well.

When I tow a trailer of that weight on a flat highway at 70 mph I get 9.5-10 mpg with the tow/haul enabled.
