Re: Trans oil change?

If I may be so rude to ask. What did parts and fluid run for it?

I bought a Wiha T40 L-wrench bent it like suggested earlier in this thread. The job was about 3 hours with the biggest pita being the front 4 bolts. I recommend treating the new bolt with anti-seize. I saw corrosion on most of them that could prevent easy removal in the future or cause thread damage in the case. I have the factory fiber shield installed.
Any recommendations on the fill procedure, that's the only part that concerns me a little after reading the service manual. the fill/check procedure to get the correct amount in there does not seem very DIY friendly in the driveway

$230 for the filter
$50 for Amsoil

At 29K I changed the fluid by draining the pan and refilling.

I parked on a level surface and raised the Jeep with Quadra-Lift to OR2. I used the hand pump kit Amsoil makes for their bottles. Put a couple quarts in and then started the Jeep. Put a couple more in while leaving the plug out and shifted from R to D while holding each gear for 5 seconds. When I saw 95 degrees on the transmission temperature gauge crawled back under to see if it was leaking out.

On the side of the pan it states to check it at 86 to 122 degrees.

If it was $5 a quart there is no way that was the proper oil for that transmission.

Only needed about 5 quarts and I bought a case of gallons over a year ago.

So it only took 5 quarts? System holds almost 9 quarts. So the fill 9 is only for a new trans or tear down maybe? 5 for dropping pan and refill?

That is correct. The valve body and torque converter hold fluid besides what is in the rotating assembly.

I have about 75% of my fluid exchanged now. I agree with dsears00 it does shift smoother. I also found out that the drain plug is a part we can buy from your Jeep dealer.

Yes at 29K miles I was going to change the filter but found I didn't have the tooling. So I drained the pan and refilled.

How did the drain plug go in and out? I ask because in a few of the videos I watched, the plug on the ZF-8 Speed made a ratcheting, "clicky" sound when being removed and reinstalled. It's resealing ability concerned me with the pan being plastic and disposable. I was thinking it's just there to allow the fluid to be drained without making a mess. Not to be reused.
