Re: V-6 or V-8, regrets?

The wife had a Ford 500 which is a Volvo chassis and same as the new Taurus. She loved it, so kept it past warranty. A month later the AC pump started to leak oil. It was a FWD chassis, plus she had a second drive shaft to the rear for AWD. With the sideways engine there was about a 1/4" between the chassis and the pump pulley. No way to remove the pump without disconnecting the second drive shaft and pulling the motor/ transaxle assembly at least half way out of the car.

Mopped up the oil and traded that car within two days.

Re: V-6 or V-8, regrets?

On a Fiero V6 you remove part of the rear suspension to change the alternator. At least on the GC everything seems easy to reach.

Or how about a transverse V6? My brother used to have to disconnect the rear motor mount and jack the engine up in order to change the back 3 sparkplugs on a grand am V6.

This sort of thing is nothing new. My brother's '79 Formula Firebird gave you the choice to either jack the car up and go through a wheel well, or remove the a/c pump to get at one of the plugs. It was around then that I quit doing most of my own wrenching.

67 Sunbeam Alpine Tiger: had to go through the footwell to ge the rear plugs (there were access covers) or my 78 Sunbird V8 - had to disconnect the drivers side motor mount and jack to one position for the #3 plug and another for #5. And it went through a lot of plugs.

This will be my last off-topic here. My old Ford flathead had enough room in the engine bay for me to sit on the fender with my feet on the inside of the wheel well while I worked on the motor. They don't make 'em like that any more!

I have a drawer full of phones that do not work in the USA any more. But then I can get directions to the nearest Subway, read engine diagnostics/codes, or play hundreds of hours of music on my current phone (and hang up on telemarketeers from my wrist watch). Do like Uconnect.
